GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Argo hockey (3-2-1) earned a valuable victory over the Utah State Aggies (5-5) on Saturday, 6-4, after notching two goals in the final period that stifled an Aggie rally to seal the win.
The Aggies opened up the at 16:41 to give Utah State the early lead. The Argos responded less than three minutes later as
Erik Gatson corralled a puck from
Leo Felt to tie up the match at one all at 13:58. The game remained tied following the end of the first period.
The Argos took their first lead of the game as
Kyler Mack and
Cody Hendrickson sent a puck to
Josh Larson to put the Argos up 2-1 at 18:41 in the second period. The Aggies tallied their second goal of the game to bring the game back to even at two.
The Argos retook the lead as Hendrickson netted a shot from
Jeron Hirschfeld, 3-2. Providence pushed their lead to a two-point advantage at 7:46 in the second as Kwiatkowski scored unassisted to put the Argos up, 4-2, to end the period.
The Aggies rallied in the final 10 minutes of the third period as they tallied a goal at 7:12 and 5:38 to push the match to its third tie at four all with 5 minutes remaining. However, that was as close as the Aggies would get to a victory as Hendrickson netted his second and third goals of the match in the final minutes of the game with the help of Hirschfeld and Felt to give the Argos their two-point advantage back and seal the victory over the Aggies.
Hendrickson led the Argos with five shots, netting three of them and assisting on another goal. Hirschfeld and Felt both garnered two assists in the win.
