Argos Rally Late for Shootout Victory over Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. – The University of Providence hockey program defeated the University of Utah 4-4 (5-4) in a shootout Friday afternoon.

The Utes (9-10-1) scored the first goal of the contest when a pass from behind the net found a Utah attacker whose backhand shot found the back of the net.

The Argos (7-4) would answer when freshman AJ Belanger sent the puck across the ice to senior Ty Alger who buried his wrist shot for his third goal of the showcase.   

With two minutes left in the first period, UP would take the lead when freshman Zach Fulton corralled the loose puck and found freshman Jonathan O'Brien for a one-timer.

Eight minutes into the second period a neutral zone turnover by the Argos found a Utah forward whose shot from the point beat the goalkeeper to tie the game at two.

The Utes would take their first lead of the game on the power play when a bouncing puck found its way to the back of the net making it 3-2.

Two minutes into the third period Utah would extend their lead to two when the Utes were able grab the loose puck in front of the net and beat the goalkeeper with a backhand shot.  

The Argos would cut into the lead when on the penalty kill Alger forced a Utes turnover and toe dragged his way past the defender for his second goal of the game.

UP would continue their momentum when freshman Zach Fulton sent a wrist shot at the net and freshman Adam Husli tipped the puck past the goalie to tie the game at four.  

Neither side was able to score in the final minutes of the game or overtime, sending the game to a shootout.

The Argos and Utes would be tied 4-4 after 10 attempts apiece, but freshman Stanislav Struthers would score on UP's 11th try and freshman Paul Jarvis would deny Utah for the seventh time to secure the shootout victory.

The Argos will be back in action Nov. 18 when they travel to Logan, Utah for their matchup versus Colorado State University. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at George S. Eccles Ice Center.
