LOGAN, Utah. – After defeating the University of Utah and #20 Colorado State in dramatic fashion, the University of Providence hockey program took the lead in the third period for the second game in a row to come away with the 3-2 victory over #4 Utah State.
The Argos (9-4) had a chance in the first minute when senior
Braden Bain found freshman
Jonathan O'Brien, but the goaltenders kick save would stop a goal.
A few minutes later, a two-on-one opportunity for the Argos was stopped after
Elliott Venini's one-timer ricocheted off the crossbar.
The Aggies (11-6) would score the first goal of the game when a blocked Argo shot was picked up by a Utah State attacker who took it all the way for a breakaway score.
Three minutes into the second period, O'Brien intercepted an Aggie pass and took it all the way for a breakaway goal to tie the game at one.
Halfway through the period, freshman
Adam Husli had a chance on the powerplay but was denied by a diving Aggie goalkeeper.
With five minutes remaining in the second period, Stevenson sent a puck all the way down the ice to freshman
Elliott Venini who had a one-on-one with the goalie and buried his wrist shot to give the Argos a 2-1 lead.
Utah state would tie the game halfway through the third period, but the Argos would answer when freshman
Colby Friedrich sent the puck in front of the net and freshman
Adam Husli tipped it past the goaltender to put UP in front.
Despite the Aggies pulling their goalie in the final minute, the Argos defense remained strong coming away with the 3-2 victory to finish the Beehive Showcase 4-0.
The Argos will be back in action Nov. 24 when visit Bottineau, North Dakota. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. versus #2 Dakota College at Bottineau at the Lumberdome.
