11/21/2024 6:38:00 PM

LOGAN, Utah – The University of Providence hockey program defeated Boise State 6-5 in overtime Thursday night.

The Broncos scored the first goal of the contest six minutes into the game, but a few minutes later junior Adam Husli toe dragged around the defender and his wrist shot found the back of the net to tie the game at one.

The Argos (13-5) continued their momentum scoring again five minutes later when sophomore AJ Belanger found a streaking junior Colby Friedrich whose one-timer beat the goalie to put UP ahead 2-1.

Neither side would threaten the rest of the period as UP went into the break leading by one.

UP started the second period off with a goal in the first minute when Belanger sauced the puck in front of the net to sophomore Jamal Kalaf who chipped it into the back of the net to make it 3-1.

The Broncos scored a minute later to cut the lead back to one, but shortly after Belanger picked up his third straight assist finding Friedrich for his second goal of the game.

Boise State would cut the lead back to one late in the second as the Argos went into the break leading 4-3.

The Broncos opened the third period with a goal to tie the game at four, but the Argos answered midways through the period when Kalaf passed it ahead to Belanger whose wrist shot found the back of the net to put UP ahead 5-4.

Boise State found the equalizer with five minutes remaining, and despite the Argos being down a man the final two minutes, the UP defense stood tall as the Argos went into overtime tied at five.

One minute into overtime freshman Kaleb West found Husli whose wrist shot beat the goaltender to give the Argos the 6-5 victory.

The Argos will be back in action tomorrow for their second game of the Beehive Showcase versus #7 Arizona State. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at George S. Eccles Ice Center.
