DICKINSON, N.D. -- The University of Providence men's wrestling program split up to compete at both the Tyler Plummer Classic in Dickinson, N.D. and a dual with #9 Southern Oregon in Ashland, Ore. on Saturday.
The Argos had two wrestlers place in the top three in junior
Blaze Sumiye and sophomore
Dre Coles.
Sumiye went 2-1 on Saturday defeating both Cael White of MSU-Northern 19-4 and Kaden Broer of Northern State University 14-8.
Coles finished 4-1 on Saturday first defeating Dongjoon Gin 17-3, his teammate 4-2, Johnny Colon 4-1, and Jacob Christianson 7-2 in the third-place match.
UP also had three other top five finishers in
Brady Ellison placing fourth and
Avian Martinez and
Hunter Dyer both finished in fifth.
In Ashland, Ore. for the dual against #9 Southern Oregon the Argos dropped the first three matches before #8
Jalen Vladic defeated Travis Thorpe 7-3.
Following a loss at 157, #5
Aden Graves bumped up to 165 where he met #12 Dylan Straley and defeated him 4-2 to bring the match within 10.
UP fell at 174 and forfeited 197 to ultimately lose the dual, but #5
Sawyer Hobbs and #18
Ethan DeRoche also picked up victories defeating #13 Adrian Chavez-Morales 7-1, and DeRoche defeated Ben Hughes 4-1 in OT.
The Argos will be back in action Friday, Feb. 7 when they host #6 Embry-Riddle for a dual. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. in Great Falls, Mont.
