SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. – The University of Providence hockey program fell to #6 Utah 5-4 in the quarterfinals of the MWCHL Conference Championships Thursday night.

The Argos (17-8-2) scored the first goal of the game when sophomore Jamal Shaw took the puck all the way down the ice and deked his defender before finding the back of the net to put UP in front 1-0.

The Utes (22-10) added a goal with three minutes left in first period but midway through the second, the Argos retook the lead when on the two-on-one break junior Adam Husli found senior Colby Friedrich who chipped it past the goaltender to give UP a 2-1 lead.

The Utes answered with a pair of goals a minute apart to take a 3-2 lead, and Utah did not go away extending their lead to two with a short-handed goal with three minutes left in the second period.

The Argos responded to begin the third period when four minutes in junior Fabian Vik picked off a Utes pass and dropped the puck back to Freidrich whose cross-crease pass to Husli connected and he pushed it past the goaltender to bring the game within one.

The Utes added a goal midway through the third period, but with just under two minutes remaining Husli sent the puck from the blue line, and it squeaked past the screened goaltender to make it 5-4.

With the goalie pulled for the final minute the Argos had a few opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net as UP fell to Utah 5-4.

The Argos will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 6 for a matchup in the consolation bracket of the MWCHL Conference Championships.
