Battle of Great Defenses Ends In UGF Volleyball Loss

BILLINGS, Mont. – Two of the best blocking teams in the country met in Billings, Mont. with the University of Great Falls volleyball visiting sixth ranked Rocky Mountain College. The Battlin' Bears, the fifth best in the NAIA in blocks, used precise attacking to avoid the Argos' seventh ranked blocking defense and defeated UGF 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-18).

While the Lady Argos only managed four blocks over three sets, well below their average of over two per set, their defensive pressure forced the Bears into hitting percentages well below their season average. RMC hit .175, .167, and .219 respectively in the three sets.

Those low hitting percentages were not only a result of good play at the net, but also the defensive efforts of the back row. UGF libero Kennedy Chadwick led the way defensively with 19 digs, part of the 66 total digs for the Argos.

The UGF offense, however, was affected even more heavily by the RMC defense. The team finished with a negative hitting percentage in the match but did earn more kills than their opponent.

Leading in kills was outside hitter Madison Wilhelm with 12 and a percentage of .079. The junior also continued to be a force defensively with 17 digs. The other major offensive contributor for the Argos was rightside hitter Kelsee Montagna. The senior had eight kills and was by far the team's most efficient hitter with a percentage of .352.

UGF will return home for another match against a ranked opponent. They play twentieth ranked Montana Tech on Saturday, October 3 at 7 pm.
