OLYMPIA, Wash. – A fourth straight overtime game ended better than the previous two for Lady Argo soccer with UGF tying Evergreen State College 1-1 OT. UGF lost its previous two games in the second overtime period.
A more aggressive approach led to the Lady Argos playing one of the team's most evenly contested games of the season. Instead of packing in the defense and hoping for a few counterattacks, UGF managed to maintain the ball through significant portions of the game and kept the shot totals about equal throughout. The shooting deferential was 18-16 in favor of the Geoducks but each team had 8 shots on goal.
The first shot to make it through to the back of the net came in the 73rd minute by way of an unassisted goal from ESC's Ellie Engel. UGF quickly responded, however, with sophomore
Malena Lennon continuing her scoring ways.
The defender turned forward, scored her third goal in five games in the 77th minute to tie the game at 1 all.
That is how the score stood after regulation, forcing the Lady Argos into their fourth overtime in as many games. UGF won the first of those contests but lose the following two in heartbreaking fashion, late in the second overtime period.
Neither of those things would happen this time, as the two teams played to a draw. UGF was the clear aggressor in both overtime periods, outshooting the Geoducks 6-2 and getting five of those efforts on goal.
While the tie gets the Lady Argos a much needed point, it was a missed opportunity to get a more valuable three points with a win over the last place team in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings.
A win would have given UGF sole possession of 7th place in the CCC standings. Instead, with a record of 2-9-1 (2-6-1) the Lady Argos are sit in a 3-way tie for 7th place with only two available spots in the 8-team conference playoffs.
UGF has two more games to try and break that tie in its favor, with the next being a home contest against Oregon Tech, the second to last place team in the standings, at home on October 21 at 1 p.m.
