CALDWELL, Idaho – Freshman forward
Eme McLaughlin scored two minutes into overtime to give Lady Argo soccer its second win of the year, 2-1 OT vs the College of Idaho. The win is the second straight win for UGF, both of which have been dramatic one-goal games.
"I'm proud of the way our girls fought and their determination over the last two games after a rough start to the season," UGF Head Coach
Brian Clarke said. "They showed a lot of character and grit."
Coming off of its first win of the season two days earlier, the Lady Argos managed to get to overtime, despite being heavily outshot in regulation by the Coyotes. UGF was in a similar situation a few weeks ago against Corban University.
Tied 1-1 heading into overtime in that game, coach Clarke asked his team if they wanted to play for a tie or go for the win. The response was resounding for an aggressive tactic, but it backfired when UGF let up a goal to lose 2-1.
Caught again in the same spot, against COI, the team again went for the win, and this time didn't have to wait long see it pay off, in fact they had to wait less than a minute.
At the 91:48 mark of the first overtime period, by way of a lofting shot that sailed over the COI keeper and into the right side of the net,
Eme McLaughlin won the game for UGF. The shot was the first of the day for the talented freshman and was set up by an assisted by junior forward
Alejandra Guzman.
The fact that it took until overtime for McLaughlin, one of the team's top offensive threats, to get off a shot and the fact that one shot scored, was rather indicative of how regulation played out.
UGF managed just one shot in the first 45 minutes, while the Yotes managed seven, but the Lady Argos made the most of its chance with the shots on goal totals at 2-1 in favor of COI.
Efficiency with scoring opportunities was also the story of the second half or Great Falls. After a 0-0 first half, junior defender
Grace Ibsen broke the deadlock for UGF, connecting on a corner kick from sophomore
Sydney Knieriem in the 61st minute. The goal was Ibsen's first of the season.
Ten minutes later, COI got an equalizer with a shot from Allie Boyd bouncing off the post, right to fellow Coyote Jamiece Yizar, who had an open net to finish on.
UGF spent much of the rest of the game defending, holding off five more shots from the Yotes, including back-to-back saves from Lady Argo goalkeeper
Kyra Dorvall in the final minute.
Dorvall finished with seven saves on 19 shots.
The Lady Argos are now 2-7 (2-4) on the year, with a 2-0 record over the weekend to put the team back in the hunt for a Cascade Collegiate Conference Playoff spot. Next for the Lady Argos will be defending conference champs, Carroll College, who travel to Great Falls for an October 8 matchup at 1:00 p.m.
