DILLON, Mont. – Lady Argo avenged its stunning 5-set home loss to University of Montana Western, sweeping the Bulldogs 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 26-24) in Dillon. UGF's momentum from a confident non-conference win during the Frontier Conference bye week carried over, with a second straight consistent team effort.
The match was closely contested all the way through, with the Lady Argos needing comebacks in the 2nd and 3rd sets to pull out the way. Despite the necessity of those comebacks, UGF looked like the strong side, but the way the third set played out almost created flashbacks to the team's difficult loss to Western in the conference opener.
Back on September 16 the Lady Argos held a 2-0 lead heading into the 3rd set but let Western get back into the match, losing a highly contested 3rd set 27-25. The Bulldogs then went on to win the match 3-2.
Once again holding a 2-0 lead, the Lady Argos looked as if they were ready to end the match in Dillon, holding set points at 24-21. But once again they let the Bulldogs hang around and UMW tied the score up at 24-24. On the brink of what could have been another collapse, the Lady Argos buckled down and won the next two points to take the match.
The key for the Lady Argos was an aggressive serving strategy. While UGF had a high number of service errors, the serves that did make it over the net wreaked havoc on the Bulldog offense. UWM plays a fast offensive style and by putting hard serves in unpredictable place, UGF kept the Bulldogs from ever settling in to a rhythm.
Junior middle blocker
Josee Pendleton played one of her best matches of the year, particularly on offense. Outside hitters
Korie Milan and
Madison Wilhelm also had effective, efficient nights on the attacking end.
UGF's record goes to 10-11 (3-4) and the Lady Argos move from 7th to 5th place in the Frontier Conference standings. Next up will be Rocky Mountain College on Saturday, October 22nd at 7 p.m. in Billings, Mont.
