Lady Argo Loss Leaves Questions About UGF’s Playoff Fate

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Lady Argo soccer once again hung tough with one of the top teams in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, but couldn't quite pull out the win, losing 1-0 to Southern Oregon University, the second ranked team in the conference.

The first 30 minutes of the game were completely controlled by the Raiders, with UGF not getting off its first shot until the 29th minute. By the time that shot got off, the score was already 1-0 in favor of SOU.

An SOU corner kick in the 25th minute led to the first goal, when the ball went to a leaping Kyra Dorvall, UGF's keeper, but the traffic around her jarred the ball loose. It then bounced around before finding the foot of Makena Totushek who scored from about 6 yards out.

The following few minutes were still controlled by Southern Oregon, but somewhere around the 30 minute mark, the Lady Argos started to control more of the possession and make efforts towards the Raider net.

Sophomore Sarah Howell, who moved from outside back to center back for the last two games, made the most aggressive offensive play of the first half for UGF. The central defender gathered a cleared ball around midfield, but instead of looking for a safe distribution to the wings, made one cut and took off down the center of the field.

From about 25 yards out, Howell launched a shot while at a full paced run. The wind took the hard line drive and bent it toward the right post forcing the Raider goalkeeper into full stretched out save.

In the second half, Dorvall, one of the 7 UGF players honored during the team's senior day, kept the game alive, making a great solo effort to save an SOU breakaway in the 63rd minute. That save was one of 5 on the day for Dorvall who ranks 19th in the NAIA in total saves (106).

UGF's best chance for an equalizer can in the 75th minute from the foot of junior Madison Quinn.  The forward lined up for a free kick at center field from about 23 yards out and hit a hard, dipping ball that looked to have the keeper beat before it clanged off of the crossbar.

Lady Argo freshman Eme McLaughlin, who scored two goals the previous day in a Lady Argo victory, got one more shot on goal for UGF in the 85th minute but couldn't convert.

UGF's record goes to 3-10-1 (3-7-1). The team's regular season is over and the team currently sits at T-7th in the CCC Standings. The top eight teams in the conference make the cut for playoffs, but while UGF's 10 points currently has the team above that cut, but Northwest Christian and Warner Pacific have 7 points with multiple games left on their schedule.  The Lady Argos will have to wait on the results of those games before knowing if their season will continue or not.
