GREAT FALLS, Mont. -
Bill Himmelberg won his 100th career game in a dominant performance over the University of Lethbridge. The Lady Argos improved on their first game of the season, shooting a much higher percentage from the field in a 70-44 win over the University of Lethbridge.
The win capped a weekend of honors, with both the 2014-15 and 2015-16 squads getting honored with banner raising ceremonies for their respective trips to the NAIA National Tournament Quarterfinals. A number of members of those teams were in town for the ceremonies and got to join their coach for his historic win.
"I'm just excited. It's an emotional time. I'm really excited to get the win," Himmelberg said of the milestone. "It's just about the kids. It's nice having those two teams from 2014-15 and 2015-16 here. They're the ones who win the games, I'm just fortunate enough to be their coach."
The Lady Argos wasted no time relieving the tension of if Himmelberg would get the milestone win or not. UGF shot nearly 50 percent from the field in the first quarter, getting the team off to a 26-9 lead after the first 10 minutes. The second quarter was as efficient offensively and just as stifling defensively for UGF, as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime with UGF up 44-18.
Things slowed down a bit in the second half as UGF played around with different lineups and got some playing time for every healthy player on the roster. The difference this year from past years was the limited drop off in talent once the reserves came in.
UGF scored 25 bench points and had seven different players score 5 points or more.
While the team's depth was demonstrated in the second half, the first half was a showcase for team's top returning players. UGF's three returning starters from 2015-16, senior center
Whitney George, senior guard/forward
Nneka Nnadi, and junior guard
Stephanie McDonagh, all finished with 12 points.
Nnadi wasn't just a standout on offense, in fact she was even better on defense, almost finishing with a double-double in points and steals with 9 steals in just 21 minutes of play.
George added 2 blocks to her stat line while McDonagh led the team in assists for the second straight game with 4.
The Argos are now 2-0 on the season with one more home game before going on the road for over a month. That game will be on October 28 at 5:30 p.m. against Yellowstone Christian College.
