Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Early Lead Gives Lady Argos 5 Set Win Over #17 Carroll

Score: UGF 3, Carroll 2 (25-15, 25-22, 21-25, 18-25, 15-13)

Location: Great Falls, Mont. (The McLaughlin Center)

Records: UGF 12-12 (5-5), Carroll 19-6 (7-3)

Quick Recap: Lady Argo volleyball went on a 12-6 run to win the first set 25-15 and kept pushing forward against the No. 17 team in the country, the Carroll College Saints. UGF was coming off a tough loss against MSU-Northern, and looked to rebound at the McLaughlin Center.

UGF brought the momentum from the first set into a closely contested second set, and won 25-21 off a kill by sophomore outside hitter Korie Milan. She was assisted by senior setter Bree Davis, who had 13 of her career high 55 total assists in the set.

Carroll showed the Lady Argos why they are nationally ranked and the conference leaders, refusing to go down in straight sets. They came roaring back in the third set, starting off on a 5-0 run. The Lady Argos answer though, and kept the set close, tying it before eventually falling 25-21. The fourth set was similar, with the Lady Argos dropping the set 25-18.

In the fifth set, the Lady Argos dug deep and reverted to the style of play that helped them win the first two sets. An early fast start, including a 5-point run, resulted in an 11-5 lead for UGF. Carroll again responded and tied the match at 13-all, before a Madison Wilhelm kill and serve gave the Argos their first win over Carroll since 2014, and a 15-13 fifth set win.

For the Argos:
  • Senior outside hitter Wilhelm had an outstanding game, with 29 kills, 18 digs, and 30.5 points. Her 29 kills are a season high.  The Lady Argo set the captain 76 times, making her a true workhorse.
  • Kennedy Chadwick posted a team-high 25 digs, almost doubling her previous season high of 16.
  • Tiffany Marks had 12 kills, and Milan posted 11, which helped boost the Argos to their win.
  • Davis stuffed the stat sheet, with not only a career high in assists, but also 8 digs, 5 kills, 3 aces and a 0.364 hitting percentage.
  • When the Argos' percentage was over .200, they won the set. The first set's percentage was 0.346, second set was 0.282, and fifth set was 0.360, compared with .191 and .077 for the third and fourth sets.
For the Saints:
  • Two Carroll players posted double-digit kills, with Paige Montgomery's 14 and Holly Morehouse's 18.
  • The Saints were outdone by UGF in a number of categories, including 76 digs to UGF's 86. Natalie Kassa played a strong game defensively though, leading the team with 25 digs.
  • This match made it back-to-back 5-setters for Carroll, after a 3-2 win over MSU-Northern on Oct. 28.
  • Jonni Dorr posted impressive stats for the Saints, leading the team in assists with 41 and was second on the team with 15 digs.
Quotes:

"To come in as focused and ready to play as we did today after a tough loss Thursday was a spectacular testament to the character and resolve of this team." – Coach Arunas Duda on the Lady Argos' ability to rebound from loss and get a win

Notes:
  • The win keeps the Lady Argos in the battle for third place in the standings, with only two games left until the Frontier Conference tournament.
  • This was the first 5 set win for UGF since Sept. 9 against Jamestown.
  • Wilhelm got her 12th double double of the season with 29 kills and 18 digs.
Next up:
The Lady Argos head to Butte next week to take on Montana Tech at 7 p.m. on Nov. 3, before closing out their season at home on Nov. 5 against LC State.
