GREAT FALLS, Mont. - A barrage of shots and a handful of golden chances weren't enough to overcome one big mistake for Argo soccer, as UGF lost to Carroll College 1-0 at home. The loss ends a 4-game winning streak for the Argos.
Â
Each team dealt out some early jabs, but UGF began to take control of play after the first 15 minutes. The Argos earned 4 corners and three shots on goal in the first 40 minutes of play, but couldn't find a finishing touch to take the lead.
Â
Carroll had a few chances of their own, nothing overly dangerous until the 44th minute when the UGF defense go a bit careless while swing the ball around the back and Carroll's Ryan Van Pevenage stole the ball for UGF center back
Ole Cloppenburgh about 30 yards from the UGF net. Van Pevenage then beat UGF keeper
Marc Girones on a one-on-one to put Carrol up 1-0 heading into the half.
Â
UGF came out with a flurry of plays that may have been the team's best chance at an equalizer. Two straight corners resulted in a long scramble in front of the Carroll goal and junior forward
Christopher Chavez, twice beat the Saint's keeper with a shot. Both times, however, Carroll defender Jonathan Taylor was standing on the goal line in the perfect position to knock the shot away.
Â
Chavez got one more crack at it on the ensuring corner, with a header near the back post that went just wide of the net.
Â
If that wasn't UGF's best scoring chance, then a breakaway later in the half was. Senior midfielder
Camilo Martinez received a long ball that broke him free 15 yards off the right sideline and it looked like her would have a chance at a one-on-one with the keeper with a Carroll defender closing in on his left. But instead of shooting, Martinez tried to cut it back to give himself more room and instead he never got a shot off.
Â
The Argos kept up the pressure for almost all of the second half. UGF outshot Carroll 12-3 in the final 45 minutes with 6 shots on goal and 6 corners, none of which resulted in goal.
Â
Outside of the one mistake, the Argo defense kept Girones relatively inactive. The sophomore only need to make saves on three other shots from the Saints.
Â
The loss brings the Argos back to a .500 record at 5-5 (4-3). Next up will be Northwest University, who is tied for the top spot in the conference with a record of 9-2 (5-1). UGF will face the Eagles on October 14 at 2 p.m. MT in Kirkwood, Wash.
