BILLINGS, Mont. – An exhibition game was just the ticket to get (14) Lady Argo basketball back on track, ending a two-game losing streak with a 78-61 win over NCAA Division II Montana State University – Billings. While the game was an exhibition it was still the first time the women's basketball program had won at MSU-Billings since Lady Argo teams in the 1980s.
"Big win. It was nice to get a win here. They're a really good program and a really good team," UGF Head Coach
Bill Himmelberg said. "I'm really proud of how the girls responded after the two losses last week. We were stepping up a level in competition, playing an NCAA DII team, and I'm proud of how they stepped up."
UGF got off to a roaring start, scoring 23 points and giving the team an 11-point lead after the first ten minutes. While the Lady Argos would cool off a bit from there, the Yellowjackets would never really challenged that lead for the rest of the night.
Better shooting and better rebounding were key advantages for the Lady Argos. UGF shot 50 percent from the field, including 55.6 percent in the second half, while MSUB shot just 37.5 percent. The Lady Argos also had an 11-rebound advantage on the glass, and made twice as many shots from 3-point range, 8 to 4.
The scoring mostly came down to three players for Great Falls. Junior guard
Stephanie McDonagh, the team's leading scorer on the season, finished with 26 points, her highest total of the season, while freshman guard
Jenna Randich scored 17, and senior center
Kalani Ulufale scored 15.
Ulufale was in the starting lineup for the first time this season and responded with a season high of 15 point along with 5 rebounds. Her 28 minutes on the floor was also a season high, continuing a trend of increasing playing time in each of the team's last 4 contests.
McDonagh added 6 rebounds and 5 assists to her stat sheet. Randich also finished with a career high 6 rebounds.
Those three players helped make up for the loss of Preseason All-American
Nneka Nnadi sat out of the game due to an ankle injury.
After the exhibition win, UGF will return home for the first time since October 28, for a game against NCAA Division III Pacific University at 5:30 p.m. In the McLaughlin center.
