Mustang Pitcher Stumps Lady Argo Batters in 4-1 UGF Loss

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Whatever magic UGF had against No. 4 Campbellsville on Monday, they lost against No. 15 Morningside College (Iowa), the host and 2-seed in the Morningside Bracket of the NAIA Softball Opening Round. The Lady Argos struggled to get on base against MC, and had few, if any mistakes to take advantage of in a 4-1 loss to the Mustangs.

UGF will now have to defeat the winner of Campbellsville vs. No. 23 Grand View (Iowa) for a chance to compete against Morningside again in the opening round championship. That elimination game will be played following the CU vs. GVS game on May 17 at 3 p.m. MT.

In the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament, the Lady Argos faced a similar situation, getting knocked out of the winner's bracket one round before the finals by Eastern Oregon University but then climbed back into the finals against EOU by winning the loser's bracket.

Mustang pitcher Aubrey Voboril got the best of the Lady Argos through most of the game, retiring the first three batters faced in six of the game's seven innings while striking out six UGF batters.

The Lady Argos started to figure Voboril out in the last few innings, getting the first hit and run against her in the bottom of the 5th. Junior Paige Bodner (10) scored the run while pinch running for junior Hali Gruntowicz (19) who started off the inning with a walk. After advancing to second on a ground out, Bodner came home off of an RBI single to center from junior Alissa Keeler (13).

UGF's only other hit in the game was a single from senior Alex Lowry (14) in the bottom of the 7th, but she was caught trying to stretch the play into a double, and the next two UGF batters lined out and flied out.

Senior pitcher Keeley Van Blaricom, the hero of UGF's big win over Campbellsville, pitched another complete game, giving up nine hits and four earned runs.
