SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Lady Argos are getting healthier, but redeveloping team chemistry proved to be a work in progress against Northwest Christian University, losing 3-0. All three goals came in the final 30 minutes of the game.
In the previous day's game, UGF saw the return of 2015's leading scorer
Alejandra Guzman, and team captain
Serafina Robles. Robles hadn't played since the team's first game of the season, while Guzman was playing in her first game action of the year.
Both players took another step forward against NCU, getting their first starts since the beginning of their respective injuries. Having both players in the starting lineup seemed to make a difference in the first half, with UGF keeping fairly even with the Beacons in terms of scoring chances. During the first 45 minutes, NCU got 4 shots on goal to UGF's 2, but the Lady Argos earned 4 corner kicks while the Beacons managed just 1.
None of those chances for either team found their way into the net and the score at the half was 0-0. That stayed true for the first 15 minutes of the second half, but in the 63rd minute, the Beacons solved UGF's defensive riddle with a header off of an NCU corner kick.
Thank goal broke the dam for NCU as the Beacons went on to score two more goals in the next 15 minutes, including another header off of a corner kick in the 76th minute.
Guzman did show signs of a return to her goal scoring ways, getting her first shot on goal of the season early in the first half. That was one of five shots on goal for the Lady Argos, with senior midfielder
Ashley Klepec adding two to her season total. Klepec not only set a new personal season high for shots on goal, but also played her first 90-minute game of the year.
The Lady Argos fall to 0-5 (0-2) on the season and will keep looking for their first win in a home match against Eastern Oregon on Sept. 22 at 4 p.m.
