GREAT FALLS, Mont. – A miracle three-pointer no time left on the clock and three point scoring margin in overtime was all that separated Argo basketball from pulling off a thrilling upset over (11) University of Montana Western. But that miracle three from Western's Dom Robinson sent the game into overtime where the Bulldogs eventually beat UGF 102-89 in double overtime.
Before Robinson hit that three, it looked like Matthew Brooks-McGregor was going to be the hero for the Argos. With 20 seconds left in the first overtime and the score tied at 80, the junior guard crossed over the defending Robinson, forcing him to shuffle backwards which gave Brooks-McGregor enough room to knock down a big three-point bucket.
In the following 17 seconds, UGF did a good job of forcing a tough three from red-hot Shyke Smalls, who missed but in the scramble the loose ball was batted out to Robinson knocked down the game-tying shot with 0.1 seconds left on the clock.
Western's forward Marcus Payne took over in the second overtime period, scoring through fouls and grabbing crippling offensive rebounds. A few missed shots from UGF kept the Argos from keeping up with Payne and staying in the game over the final few minutes.
Based on the first half, it looked like the Argos could come away with a second straight confident upset of a ranked team at home. Much as they did in the team's win over (15) MSU-Northern a week earlier, the Argos looked like the better team through the first 20 minutes.
Senior guard Sigman Farmer III was on fire to start the game, hitting two shots from behind the arc in the first two minutes of play. The rest of the team then followed suit, hitting 43 percent from the floor and 42 percent from long range in the first half.
UGF was equally effective defensively, holding the Bulldogs to a shooting percentage of 29 and only allowing two made three-point shots. The only efficient scoring for Western came from the free-throw line where they went 10-12.
The offensive numbers slightly better for the Argos in the second half, but on the other end, the Bulldogs caught fire. Western hit 9-16 from three and 16-30 from the floor, taking their first lead of the game at the 16 minute mark in the second half.
After Western took the lead, the Bulldogs expanded it to 11 before UGF answered back. Five straight points from Brooks-McGregor swung the momentum and a three from junior Sergio Berkley pulled UGF back within one point with four minutes left in regulation.
Two and a half minutes later, two free throws from Berkley tied the game up and then a made layup from Farmer gave the Argos the lead back. Western responded with a layup on the next possession to tie the game at 74 all.
A turnover on UGF's next possession and then a foul of Robinson, an 80 percent free throw shooter, with three second left seemed to doom UGF's chances. Two shocking misses from Robinson kept hope alive and the game went into overtime.
Four Argo players finished the game with 10 or more points. Leading the way was Berkley who set a new career high with 23 points off of 7-11 shooting.
The next highest scorer for UGF was Brooks-McGregor with 15 points, followed by Farmer with 14 points. Farmer came one rebound shy of a double-double, adding 9 rebounds and 2 steals to his game totals.
The fourth Argo to score in double-digits was junior guard Davone Olive Jr. who scored 8 of his 11 points in the first half.
UGF's record goes to 10-6 (2-3) with the loss and ties the team for fifth place in the Frontier Conference standings. The team they are tied with, Rocky Mountain College, will also UGF's next opponent. The two teams will tip off inside the McLaughlin Center at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 14.
