Late Lights Run Ruins Lady Argo Upset Bid, UGF Loses 70-64

HAVRE, Mont. – A 62-59 lead with three minutes to go had (RV) Lady Argo basketball in position to upset (11) Montana State University – Northern, but a late run from the Lights turned the tables and UGF lost 70-64. In the end the Lady Argos simply didn't make enough shots, missing six of their last seven shots in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

Despite a total score under its season average, the UGF team played one of its move efficient offensive games of the season. The Lady Argo's 46 percent shooting from the field was the team's fourth highest percentage of the year and highest since December 3. It was also first time all year, that the team kept its turnovers in the single digits, giving up the ball just 9 times.

"I was really proud of the way we played offensively tonight," UGF Head Coach Bill Himmelberg said. "We had a 4-point lead at the end but Northern played really well in those last few minutes."

That lead came by way of a 60-56 UGF lead with 3:47 left on the clock. A bucket in the paint from center Kalani Ulufale brought the score to that total and was bookended by two other scores from the senior. Her basket at the 4:02 mark broke a 56-56 tie and her score a minute later brought UGF's lead to 62-59, and would be the team's last points until the final few seconds of the game.

Over the final three minutes, the basket on UGF's side of the court seemed to have a lid on it, and despite getting shots off on all but one of eight final possessions, one shot went through the rim and the Lady Argos never got to the free-throw line.

In the first half, the Lady Argos looked poised for the upset. The first half was largely a defensive battle between the two teams, with UGF seniors Nneka Nnadi and Whitney George combining for 8 points, which almost outscored the entire Skylight's squad.

The second quarter belonged to senior point guard Darah Huertas-Vining. Usually a 3-point shooter and passer, Huertas-Vining worked the paint, the elbows, and the area behind the arc in scoring 10 of her 17 points in the 10 minute period. Those 10 points were half of UGF's 20 in the quarter and helped the Lady Argos to a 30-26 lead heading into the half.

Things were a bit different in the third quarter. Northern took advantage of a cooling off Lady Argo offense, and turned a 6-point deficit into a 1-point lead by the time the fourth quarter started. That lead was quickly erased by two buckets from junior Stephanie McDonagh and Ulufale. The latter scored all 8 of her points in the fourth quarter, over half of the team's total points in the period.

Huertas-Vining finished with a team leading 17 points while also leading the team with 3 assists and finishing second on the team with 7 rebounds. McDonagh, who drew the brunt of MSUN's defensive attention, was UGF's next leading scorer finishing with 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals, all of which were below her season averages.

Nnadi came one rebound away from her second double-double in three games, with a final tally of 10 points and 9 rebounds.

The loss drops the Lady Argos to 12-8 (1-8) on the year, with a home game against Carroll College up next. The two teams will tip off at 5:30 p.m. in the McLaughlin Center on Saturday, January 28.
