KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – One day after officially being eliminated from playoff contention, the University of Providence men's soccer team played its final game of the 2017 season and fell to Oregon Tech 4-1. The score and the situation would suggest a team that didn't have its heart in it, but that wasn't necessarily true. The Argos actually outshot the Owls and only had 1 less shot on goal.
Through the first 25 minutes of play, the Argos actually looked like the better side. UP had the game's first shot on goal in the 8th minute and outshot OIT 7-3 in the first 20 minutes.
That constant pressure even led to the game's first goal. In the 24th minute, a familiar name scored for the Argos. Senior forward
Christoffer Bisbo entered the game as the Cascade Collegiate Conference's leading scorer and one of the top goal scorers in the country, and he struck again.
The play started with sophomore
George Holloway, who had developed a strong on-field chemistry with Bisbo, driving into the left edge of the OIT penalty box. Still on the left edge, he sent a low centering cross to the top of the six-yard box. Bisbo crashed to the spot with a defender on his back and got his foot on it for a touch past the OIT keeper.
Bisbo finishes the season with 13 goals in 14 games.
All of the momentum built from that first 25 minutes was negated in the 35th minute when Oregon Tech scored its first goal of the game. The equalizer from OIT's Lodewijk Bloemzaad seemed to take the air out of UP's sails.
The Argos didn't get off another shot in the half and play stagnated for the three minutes. Then in the 38th minute, Oregon Tech struck again to take a 2-1 lead that stood at the half.
UP's funk continued at the start of the second half. The Argos drew a yellow card and 4 other fouls in the first 10 minutes of the period, while the Owls got off 3 shots. OIT's fourth shot of the half was again from Bloemzaad and again found the back of the net.
Holloway got his head on a corner kick in the 58th minute for UP's first shot and first shot on goal of the half, but soon after, OIT struck again to build an insurmountable 4-1 lead.
The Argo's offense got more productive for the rest of the half, finishing the period with 8 shots and 4 shots on goal, but none of them scored.
UP ends its season with a record of 6-9 (5-8). The team misses the CCC playoffs for the first time since joining the conference in 2015. UP had made the CCC championship game in each of the past two seasons.
