Playoff Security Leads to Letdown Loss for Lady Argo Soccer

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Having already secured a spot in the 2017 Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament, the University of Providence women's soccer team seemed to take its foot off the gas in its final regular season game. The Lady Argos were outplayed by Oregon Tech in a 3-0 loss.

There was hardly anything redeemable about the Lady Argo's first half performance. A dud of a UP had little control of play and rarely possessed the ball as the Owls outshot the Lady Argos 13-0 through 45 minutes.

OIT wasted little time getting on the board. The Owl's Emily Hillestad made the score 1-0 with a goal in the 7th minute. UP held off the Owls for the next 25 minutes, but in the 32nd minute, OIT broke through again to enter halftime with a 2-0 lead.

The second half started about as poorly as the first half went. OIT earned two early corn kicks, the second of which set up a cross from Ellie Quercia. Her ball into the UP penalty box found the head of Kylie Cowell for the third goal of the game.

After falling behind 3-0, the Argos finally showed some signs of life. Senior forward Madison Quinn took the team's first shot of the game in the 62nd minute and more shots followed.

Next was the team's first shot on goal, an effort from sophomore forward Eme McLaughlin in the 64th minute.

UP ended the half with 4 shots to OIT's 5 and 2 shots on goal to OIT's 1.

While UP wasn't playing for a playoff spot, a win would have helped the Lady Argos with playoff seeding. With the loss, the team will be the eighth seed of eight teams in the tournament.

The Lady Argos finish the regular season with a record of 6-9 (5-6), the program's best conference record since joining the CCC in 2015. The official playoff schedule has yet to be released, but the Lady Argos should end up facing regular season conference champion (RV) Eastern Oregon (10-3-2, 9-1-1). When the two teams played each other in the regular season, EOU won a close 3-2 battle.
