Finger Tip Save Keeps Argo Soccer from Results vs Yotes

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Argo soccer had a handful of quality chances, including a shot that came a few outstretched fingers away from scoring, against the College of Idaho, but none of those opportunities ended in goals, as UP fell 1-0 at home to the Yotes.

That one chance came from senior Christoffer Bisbo who one-touched a pass from about 6 yards out in the 64th minute that rolled on the ground, past the COI goalkeeper. At the last second, the keeper fell to the ground, sprawled his right arm backward, got a few fingertips on the ball, and stopped it from rolling any further with just a foot between the ball and the goal line.

Had the shot scored, UP would have led 1-0 at the time. Instead, it took another 11 minutes for a goal to break the 0-0 deadlock, but this time it was the College of Idaho's. A perfect pass from Guilherme Siqueira found Ben Bechor open on the left side of the UP penalty box and Bechor finished into the lower right corner.

Before all that drama went down, the two teams played an even first half that saw both teams possess for significant stretches and have a handful of scoring chances without any goals. UP slightly got the better of the first 45 minutes in terms of shots, with 6 shots to CI's 4, but the Yotes had 4 more corner kicks.

The first half also saw the beginning of an unpleasant pattern – lots of yellow cards. There were 4 total yellow cards given out by the officials in the first, with UP drawing 3. That trend worsened in the second half and the game ended with 10 total cards given, all of them yellow without any player picking up a second.

At the start of the second half, the Yotes made an early push, getting 3 shots and a corner kick in the first five minutes of play. UP answer with 2 shots and a corner kick of its own in the following few minutes. CI got the first shot on goal of the half in the 54th minute, but after that, it was mostly Argos until about the 70th minute.

During those 15 minutes of primarily Argo possession, UP had a series of dangerous looks at the opposing net, including Bisbo's shot that game just short. That run was eventually ended by the Yote goal in the 75th minute.

After falling down 1-0, UP's play became more frantic and a little less composed. Despite a bit of overreaching, the team still saw both junior forward George Holloway and freshman midfielder George Almeida got good shooting opportunities right around the top of the penalty box. Holloway's effort was saved, and Almeida's, which came in the 88th minute was blocked by a defender.

In the end, the Argos ended up with 15 shots to CI's 13, but the Yotes finish with 2 more shots on goal and the game's only goal. Bisbo led UP with 7 shots and 2 shots on goal, but his streak of goals in three straight games came to an end.

With the loss, UP's record goes to 5-4 (4-3) on the year and slips to fifth in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings. In less than 24 hours from the end of the College of Idaho game, the Argos will host rival (10) Rocky Mountain College. The game begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 7 on Argo Field. The Argos are 0-2 this year against nationally ranked teams.
