GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Against a team that only lost to defending Frontier Conference Champion (14) Carroll College by 7 points the night before, the University of Providence held a halftime lead but turnovers and missed shots cost them in the second half, falling to (RV) Our Lady of the Lake University 84-74.
"We made some crucial turnovers that were really just mental errors. That's something that we need to work on, but overall, I was pretty happy with our performance this weekend," Head Coach
Anthony Owens said. "I know we didn't get two wins, but I thought we played pretty hard and we competed well in both games."
OLLU plays an almost constant full-court press that forced Carroll into 19 turnovers the night before and while UP actually broke the press with decent regularity the sped-up pace led to 6 Argo turnovers in the first 10 minutes of play. Those turnovers gave the Saints a 10 point lead that UP spent the last seven minutes of the half recovering from.
Sparking the comeback was senior guard Jared Schultz. After hitting 3-5 from 3-point range in the previous night's game, the Montana native picked up where he left off, hitting 3 threes in the half, including one with 6:53 on the clock that swung the momentum UP's way.
"Jared is playing really well right now. We're trying to get him as many minutes as well can and trying to get him more shots as well," Owens said.
With less than three minutes left in the period, UP brought the score within 2 points but a three from OLLU brought it back to 5.
Senior Matthew Brooks-McGregor then hit a big three to answer with 2:30 left in the period and then got a steal and transition layup on the next possession to tie the game at 40-40. Junior Deontae Woodbridge got a layup with just over a minute to go to give the Argos a 42-40 lead at the break.
UP turned it over on each of its first three possessions in the second half which gave the momentum and the lead back to OLLU. The Argos shot 39 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes after hitting 61 percent in the first.
The Saints grew their lead steadily as the half went on, eventually leading by as much as 20. Shultz and McGregor hit back-to-back three with less than two minutes left to pull within 9 but that's as close as the team would get.
Seniors Steven Daho-Clark and Jared Schultz provided a potent inside-outside combination, particularly in the first half. The former had his second double-double of the year with 12 points and 15 points, while the latter scored 15 points on 5 3-point field goals.
Brooks-McGregor was the team's other top scorer, getting 10 points on 3-4 shooting. He was also one of the few Argos to not have a turnover in the game.
The Argos have lost their last two games and now have a record of 4-3. They will look to get back on track at the MSU-Northern Tournament where they will take on Valley City State University on November 24 and Salish Kootenai College on November 25.
