LOGAN, Utah – Three different players for the University of Providence men's basketball team eclipsed double-digit scoring in Argo basketball's exhibition game against NCAA Division I opponent Utah State University. UP lost to the Aggies 98-54 after losing to USU 84-51 last season.
Both the first half and second half had the exact same score, 49-27 with similar shooting percentages for each team. UP was plagued by turnovers against a longer, faster level of player and also struggled to make shots from three, shooting a 3-point percentage of 20.
While the Argo's point totals were the same in each half, those points came from a different group of players in each period.
In the first half, senior guard Sergio Berkley and senior point guard DuShaun rice were team's primary scorers. Berkley led the team with 9 points, while rice had 7. The two did a good job of getting to the free-throw line, but Berkley shot a surprising 50 percent from the line after making almost 80 percent last year.
Redshirt-sophomore Kevin Schilling Jr. took over the second half for UP. The 5-11 guard came off the bench to score all 12 of his points in the second half. Not only did he put up points but he did so without missing a shot. He went 3-3 from the floor, 2-2 from three, and 4-4 from the free-throw line.
Had the game been a one that counted toward UP season, the Schillings performance would have given him a career-high in points.
The only Argo to score consistently in both halves was sophomore guard Quesly-Marie Noresias. He led the team in scoring, getting 7 points in each half for a total of 14. He did so efficiently as well, though not as efficiently as Schilling, hitting 4-8 from the field and 6-9 from the free-throw line. He also led the team with 3 assists.
The game won't change UP's record of 2-1 on the season. Next up will be another NCAA Division I exhibition game, this time against the University of California, Berkley on Monday, November 6 at 8 p.m. MST. It will be the first time in the modern era that the Argos have faced a PAC-12 opponent.
