GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Carroll College shot 50 percent from three and 51.7 percent from the floor and the University of Providence just couldn't keep up despite forcing 21 turnovers and breaking a steals record. The Lady Argos fell 78-65 but not before senior guard
Stephanie McDonagh broke the program record for career steals.
McDonagh entered the game 2 steals shy of tying the record and narrowed that to 1 on the first possession of the game, getting in the passing lanes scoring on a fast break layup. With 2 minutes left in the first quarter, she picked another pocket to tie the record at 228 total steals.
Less than 30 seconds later, the ball was on the floor again thanks to the senior. She hit the floor, fell on the ball, and drew a foul to break the record before the first quarter ended.
McDonagh's steals played a big part in the Lady Argos getting out to an early lead. Carroll turned the ball over 9 times in the first quarter, and UP turned that into 11 points off turnovers and a shooting percentage of 53.3 percent. That gave the Lady Argos a 22-15 lead through one period of play.
What the Saint's first quarter turnovers overshadowed was that the team was already hot from the field. Carroll matched UP's 53 percent on 7-13 shooting and while the Lady Argos cooled off from there, the Saints did not.
After making 8 field goals in the first quarter, the Lady Argos made just 4 in the second and 3 in the third. The Saints, on the other hand, shot over 50 percent in each of the game's four 10 minute periods.
Besides a big differential in shooting percentage, the other problem for the Lady Argos was rebounding. The team was without leading rebounder
Kallee Wilson after the senior forward got hurt in the previous day's game. On top of that, the team's other best player on the glass, freshman
Parker Esary, found herself in foul and only played 20 minutes.
For the second time all year, the Lady Argos lost the rebound battle, grabbing a season low of 26 boards to Carroll's 41. The other game that saw UP get outrebounded was the team's only other loss on the year.
Only two Lady Argos made as many shots as they missed. One of those was freshman
Brittany White who went 1-2 with a made 3-pointer in the first half. The other was McDonagh, who as usual led UP in scoring. Not only did she break the steals record, but she also scored
20 points while shooting 50 percent and adding 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.
Despite limited time on the guard and going up against Carroll's top player, junior center Hannah Dean, Esary still managed to reach double-digit points for the third straight game. Fellow freshman,
Emilee Maldonado also broke 10 points, scoring 15 along with 3 assists.
The loss is the second of the year for UP, bringing the team's record to 10-2 (1-1). UP will get a break from Frontier Conference play until January 2, 2018. Before that, the team will play Montana State University-Billings on December 9, 2017.
