Consistent Doubles Drive in 2 Wins for Lady Argos

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Increased consistency defined Lady Argo softball's doubleheader against Presentation College. UGF started the season with a 4-0 record in the PC Dome Classic over the previous two days, but made a habit of allowing early runs and needing significant rallies in the middle innings. That was the case in two wire-to-wire wins against Presentation 6-3, and 6-1.

UGF entered the game ranked 3rd in the NAIA in doubles per game and used another from senior first baseman Jackie Thomas to score two runs in the top of the 1st inning. Unsurprisingly she drove in seniors Paige Bodner and Morgan Robinson, UGF's two leaders in runs after the season opening tournament.

Bodner and Thomas again combined for a run in the 3rd, with Thomas hitting another double to drive her teammate in from third. Then, in the top of the 4th, starting pitcher Mikayla Deigan helped her own cause, driving a ball over the center field fence for her first home run of her college career.

Through the first three innings Deigan, a redshirt-freshman, was dominant in her first start on the mound. Only one of the first nine batters Deigan faced reached base safely and that runner was caught stealing by junior Bailey Henderson in her first start behind the plate.

The game started to get away from Deigan, however in the bottom of the 4th. Presentation hit two doubles to start the innings and later hit a triple to bring the score to 4-3.

A defensive error by the Saints put a UGF runner on base to start the 5th, and as they did in the Dome Classic, the Lady Argos didn't miss the opportunity. A triple from Bodner, her first extra base hit of the season, brought pinch runner Kyra Dorvall across home.

Junior Kristina George, who through four games has already begun to establish herself as a cool closer, took over for Deigan in the bottom of the 5th. George earned second save of the season, pitching three shutout innings with just 1 hit allowed and three strikeouts.

Another double, this time the fourth of the season from junior Kylie Gonzales brought Robinson home in the 6th to bring the final tally to 6-3.

Doubles were again the story in Game 2. With a scoreless tie through two innings, senior catcher Jocelyn Kaufman started the top of the 3rd inning with a double to center. A ground out and a pop up from the next two batters made it likely that UGF would strand a runner on base for the third straight inning, but then UGF's RBI leader, Gonzales stepped to the plate.

The junior knocked a single to center to score the game's first run. She then made it to second on a wild pitch. That set up Thomas, the other clutch Lady Argo hitter with runners on base, who came through again with an RBI single.

Much like Deigan in the game before, Abeyta had a solid first three innings. She allowed a few more hit, but got away with it. Presentation's third double of the game finally resulted in a run, driving a walked runner in the bottom of the 4th. Unlike the 4th inning in Game 1, the damage ended there.

As the first three batters of the inning, Gonzales, Bodner, and Thomas loaded the bases to start the 5th. While it wasn't the most ideal RBI, senior Hali Gruntowicz hit into a double play to bring a runner home.

George again took over in the 5th, earning another save with 3 allowed hits and 4 strikeouts in the final three innings.

Kaufman was score twice in the next two innings for UGF. She walked after junior Gabriel Canibeyaz doubled to lead off the 6th and both her and Canibeyaz came home off a single from Gonzales.

Kaufman then doubled in the 7th, her third double of the game, and reached home on a single from Robinson. The team captain looked to benefit from a break after Henderson caught most of Game 1. She finished the game 3-3 at the plate with 3 doubles, 3 runs, and a walk. She also had 6 putouts and 1 assists while catching all 7 innings.

Gonzales went 2-3 in Game 2 with 3 RBI, 1 run, and a walk. Bodner and Robinson continued to hit tremendous percentages. Robinson went 4-8 over the course of the day as UGF's leadoff hitter, while Bodner went 4-6 with 2 walks.

UGF is now 6-0 to start a season for the first time in program history. The doubleheader against Presentation marks the end of non-conference play for the Lady Argos who will return to Great Falls for their home opener and conference season opener against Carroll College. The two teams will play back-to-back doubleheaders on Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 4.
