ASHLAND, Ore. – Clue truly hasn't counted for Lady Argo softball against Southern Oregon University. After giving up two late-inning rallies against the Raiders in the previous day's doubleheader, UGF lost both games in the second doubleheader on walk-offs.
UGF entered the final inning of Game 1 with a 2-1 lead, but the Raiders earned 3 hits and loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh before UGF walked in the winning run. Game 2 was even more heartbreaking, with the game going two extra innings with the score tied at 5-5 before a single and two SOU doubles gave the Raiders a 6-5 win.
The first game of the day started off as a pitcher's duel. UGF's
Kristina George and SOU's Gabby Sandoval both held the other team's batters scoreless through five innings and it was the Lady Argos that finally drew first blood.
The sixth inning started off with a single right field from junior
Bailey Henderson and then an SOU throwing error on a sacrifice bunt put runners first and third with no outs.
Henderson tried to reach home from third on an ensuing fielder's choice but was thrown out. Then seniors
Jocelyn Kaufman and
Jackie Thomas each singled on back-to-back at-bats with Thomas's hit bringing senior
Paige Bodner and pinch runner
Kyra Dorvall safely across home plate.
As they did in both contests the previous day, SOU quickly responded, getting one run back in the bottom of the inning and then starting the bottom of the seventh with a double to left field.
SOU got two more hits and walked twice to score 2 runs in the inning including a walk-off walk with the bases loaded.
Thomas's single accounted for all of UGF's runs in the game, but the team certainly had its share of opportunities for more. The Lady Argos left 6 runners on base, including Kaufman, who went 2-3 which brought her season batting average to 0.471 by the end of the game.
What UGF's offense lacked in Game 1, it gained in first inning of Game 2. Henderson and Dorvall got out to lead off the inning, but with 2 outs in the inning junior
Kylie Gonzales started what turned out to be an excellent game for her at the plate.
Gonzales hit her first of 2 doubles in the game to left field and a fielding error on a line drive to second base by Kaufman kept the inning alive for UGF. Another 2 RBI hit from Thomas brought Gonzales and Kaufman home and then the third double of the inning, this time from senior
Hali Gruntowicz made the score 3-0 Lady Argos.
In typical fashion, SOU had an answer, scoring 2 runs in the second inning, but this time UGF had answer of its own –
Kylie Gonzales. After senior
Kyra Dorvall singled to center, Gonzales hit her second home run of the season to bring the score to 5-2.
SOU tied the game up in the next inning, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Lady Argos put two on base in the top of the fifth but could bring either home. UGF wouldn't get another hit for the rest of the game.
With the scored tied at 5-5 after a full seven innings, the game went into extras. UGF escaped out of the eighth inning after SOU put two runners on base, including one in scoring position, but the team wasn't as lucky in the ninth. A single and two bunts scored the winning run for the Raiders for UGF's second straight walk-off loss.
Gonzales finished the game going 3-4 with 2 doubles, 1 home run, 2 RBI, and 2 runs.
Thomas led UGF with 4 total RBI in the two games including 1 double and 1 run.
After going 0-4 against SOU in the two doubleheaders, the Lady Argos fall to 8-6 (1-5) on the season. They will travel to La Grande, Oregon for their next two doubleheaders against Eastern Oregon University on March 17 & 18.
