VANCOUVER – The offensive production that went missing in Lady Argo softball's previous doubleheader against University of British Columbia finally showed up, but the same was true for UBC as UGF lost to the Thunderbirds 13-7. The two teams only played one game, with the originally scheduled non-conference Game 2 canceled due to weather.
UGF's two through four batters gave the team an early lead in the first inning. The first hit of the game came from junior
Bailey Henderson who hit a double to center with 1 out. Fellow junior
Kylie Gonzales kept things alive with a walk and then senior
Hali Gruntowicz brought Henderson home with a single to third.
In the next stanza, redshirt-freshman
Mikayla Deigan and junior Gabriel Canibeyaz each reached base safely to get things back to the top of the order. Once again, that group came through, starting with a single from senior
Morgan Robinson that loaded the bases with 1 out for Henderson and Gonzales.
Henderson's discerning eye led to a walk, which brought in 1 run, and then Gonzales brought in 2 more runs with a double down the left field line.
The 4-0 Lady Argo through the top of the second didn't last long. UBC hit 2 doubles and an inside-the-park home run to make up that deficit and more with 5 second inning runs.
A UGF pitching switch eliminated the extra base hits in the bottom of the third, but instead the Thunderbird successfully played small ball to add 3 more runs to the total.
Gruntowicz, who had emerged from an early season slump to hit 0.454 over the last two weeks, hit her fourth home run of the season, a 2 RBI effort, in response.
Despite the senior's home run, UGF still trailed 8-6 with half the game played out, and the second half didn't get better.
UBC score twice more in the bottom of the fifth, and then scored 3 more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The 13-6 lead put the game well out of reach for the Lady Argos, despite a freshman
Hanna Tarum scoring on a ground out in the top of seventh.
The two offensive leaders for UGF were Gruntowicz and Canibeyaz. The former went 2-4 with 3 RBIs, 1 run and 1 home run, while the latter went 3-4 with 1 run.
With the loss, UGF is now 0-11 in road games since the start of conference play with an overall record of 11-14 (3-12). The good news for the team's next pair of doubleheaders is that they'll be played at home. The bad news is that they will be against the number two team in the CCC standings, Corban University. The first game of the series will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 7.
