MISSOULA, Mont. – A historic regular season is over for #23 Argo lacrosse and it ends on a five game winning streak after a 15-2 win over MCLA Division I Washington State University. UGF's final regular season record of 9-3 (3-2) is a program best and has the team in the PNCLL playoffs for the first time in program history.
The game completes a near perfect finish to the season for UGF, that featured three wins over ranked teams and emergence of one of the nation's best defensive units. For the fourth time in the last five games, the Argo defense held its opponent under 10 goals and only allowed 1 goal in the first half.
Over that same stretch of time, the Argo offensive unit as averaged almost 12 goals per game.
"We're lightyears better than we were when we started the season," UGF Head Coach
Fred Boekel said. "I think they're really starting to understand concepts better in terms of possessing the ball offensively and knowing their slide packages defensively."
As the team did against #8 Montana State, #21 Western Washington, and Puget Sound, UGF gave up the first goal of the game against Washington State. Then, as was the case in each of those games, the team didn't score again until the third quarter.
By the time the Cougars scored their second goal, the first score of the third quarter, the game was well out of hand. UGF scored 5 goals in each of the first two periods with a balanced an efficient attack.
Five different Argos scored in the first half, with junior
Josh Smith scoring three times, sophomore
Chase Clark three times, and freshman
Dante Duran twice.
Play in the third quarter was a significant letdown for UGF. After giving up WSU's second goal of the game, the Argos failed to score in the 15 minutes.
That all changed in the fourth quarter, with UGF getting back to form. Sophomore
Kobe Johnson started the quarter on fire, scoring 3 straight goals, two of which were unassisted. Freshman
Connor Gilbert then followed that up with 2 goals of his own to bring about the game's final tally of 15-2.
Clark led the Argos in total points with 3 goals and 1 assist, while Smith and Johnson each had 3 goals.
With the regular season done, the next step for UGF will the PNCLL playoffs. The six team postseason tournament will run from April 28-30 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The winner of the league tournament will get an automatic bid to the MCLA National Championships, but even without winning the tournament, the red-hot Argos could still earn an at-large bid to nationals.
