Argo Basketball Falls on the Road to Warriors, 96-87

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Two Argos score 20 or more points, but the Corban Warriors handed the Argos their first loss on the season, 96-87, to close out their tournament play on Saturday evening.
 
The first half was a back-and-forth battle between the University of Providence and Corban. The Argos opened things up with five straight points, but the Warriors would outscore the Argos 7-2 to tie things up at seven. Jalen Shepard knocked down a three to put the Argos up again, but the Warriors immediately responded with their own long-range shot to even the score, 10-10. The Argos and Warriors would then go for the next 10 minutes of game time trading shots and leads following nearly every shot before Brandon Cotton free throws tied things up at the 5-minute mark of the first half, 30-30. The Warriors outscored the Argos 11-7 to take a four-point lead with less than a minute remaining, but the Argos closed out the first 20 minutes with two free throws from Austin Starr to head into the locker room only down by two, 41-39.
 
The Warriors came out of the break with five straight points to push their lead to seven, 46-39. Over the next four minutes of game clock, the Argos went on a scoring drought as they tallied a layup from Jaxen Hashley to put the game at 46-41 before the Warriors tallied a 12-0 run as the Argos went 0-6 to put Corban up by 17, 58-41. The Warriors maintained a double-digit lead for over 10 minutes of game time until a three from Starr cut the deficit to eight with under five minutes to play, 83-75. The Warriors continued to hold the Argos back until Starr connected on a jumper, followed by a three from Shepard to cut the Warriors lead to its lowest since the half, 89-85. Corban turned the tide with a layup and two free throws to double the deficit, 93-85, with 28 seconds remaining. The Argos would garner one more layup from Cotton, but three Warrior free throws closed out the game, 96-87.
 
Starr led all scorers in the match with 27 points, shooting 50 percent from the field and 42 percent from long range. He also collected five boards, two assists, and a steal. Shepard was the Argos second player with 20-plus points, while also tallying five boards, three assists, and a steal. Cotton nearly notched 20 points as he scored 19, in addition to leading the team in assists with seven and grabbing four rebounds. Jaxen Hashley collecting a team-high seven boards.

The Argos will travel continue their month away as they head to Havre, Montana for a tournament hosted by MSU-Northern to take on Oregon Tech on Friday, November 23 and Portland Bible College on Saturday, November 24.
