No. 20 Argos advance to Frontier Conference Semifinals with Sweep of Skylights

BUTTE, Mont. – The University of Providence volleyball team (20-9) advanced to the semifinal round of the Frontier Conference Tournament following a sweep of the MSU-Northern Skylights (1-23) on Friday afternoon, 3-0.

The Skylights tallied the first point of the match, but the Argos quickly responded with two of their own to take a 2-0 lead. The Skylights collected another kill to tie up the match at two, but two kills from Sydney Andersen quickly changed that to put Providence back in the driver's seat, 4-2. The Argos maintained the momentum to outscore the Skylights 6-4 to push their lead to four, 10-6. Following two MSU-Northern errors, the Argos capitalized with a 9-2 run to push the deficit to double-digits, 19-8. MSU-Northern rallied to score four, while the Argos tallied one on a Skylight service error, but it was too little too late as the Argos were able to close out the match with five unanswered to take the 1-0 advantage.
 
A kill from Isabelle Parker and a Skylight attack error opened up the second set to a 2-0 Argo lead. The Skylights tallied five points on Argo errors and a pair of kills to take the advantage from the Argos, 5-4. Providence kicked things into gear following two Skylight errors to go on a 12-2 rally to grab a nine-point lead, 16-7. The latter half of the set was a battle as both squads to the end, but the Argos led by outscoring the Skylights 9-8 to close out the second set and take a 2-0 lead.
 
The Argos came out firing in the third as they took a quick 9-5 lead to open the set. MSU-Northern tallied a kill and garnered an attack error to bring the game back within two, 9-7, but three Skylight errors quickly put the match at 12-7. The two squads traded two-point runs to push the match to a three-point Argo lead, 14-11. The Skylights were not going down without a fight as they rallied to close the gap and outscored the Argos 9-6 to tie up the set at 20 all. A Skylight attack error sparked four unanswered from the Argos to push the set to match point, but the Skylights responded with a kill and earned two errors to try and push the set to extra points. Cydney Finberg finished with a clutch kill at the end to close the game out in regulation and sealed the Argos sweep of the Skylights, 25-23.
 
Andersen led the Argos offensively with eight kills, while Tymerie Vincelli and Melissa Gonzalez followed closely behind garnering seven and six kills, respectively. Averi Dyer held the backline for the Argos with nine digs, while Isabelle Parker, Cameron Davies, and Ember Schwindt did work at the net tallying two blocks each. Paige Jensen finished the match with 13 assists.

The Argos advanced to the semifinal matches and will battle against the Montana Tech Orediggers tomorrow at 1 p.m.
