PASCO, Wash. – Having just one outdoor practice in the entire spring season due to snow, definitely had an effect on the University of Province softball team during their first official games on an outdoor field. UP played (3) Southern Oregon University and after staying close halfway through each game, saw the wheels fall off late in two 18-4 losses.
Throughout the 13 total innings, as Game 1 only went 6 because of the mercy rule, the Lady Argos were sloppy in their fielding, committing 9 total errors which led to 10 total unearned runs. The games were technically home games for UP, the same weather that has kept the Lady Argos from practicing outside also meant the games had to be relocated to Paso, Washington 500 miles away.
GAME 1
Key Moments:
- SOU started off the first inning hot and also took advantage of the first UP error on the way to 4 runs in a top of the first that saw all nine members of the lineup get to bat.
- The Lady Argos got back in it in the bottom of the third. They entered the inning trailing 6-1 but a 2 RBI double from Karlie Southworth (SO/Lewistown, Mont.) led the way to a 3 run inning that had UP back within 2 runs of the Raiders.
- During the top of the sixth is when the Raiders pulled away with the W, earning 10 total runs. That rally included 3 more errors from the Lady Argo defense.
At the Plate:
- One of the of most successful batters for UP was Southworth. She came into the doubleheader leading the conference in batting average (.600) and stayed on that pace, going 2-3 with 2 RBI and her second double of the season.
- Catcher, Bailey Henderson (SR/Fernley, Nev.) also continued to be one of the team's top offensive threats. The senior went 2-3 with 1 run.
- UP's bats forced SOU's ace Gabby Sandoval out of the game part way through the third inning.
In the Circle:
- For the first time in 2018, Kristina George (SR/Salt Lake City, Utah) couldn't go the distance. She pitched 5.1 innings and although errors also hurt her stats, she struggled for the first time this season, giving up 16 hits and 11 earned runs.
- Relieving George in the top of the sixth was KJ Schweikert (FR/Columbia Falls, Mont.) who gave up 2 more runs but eventually stopped the bleeding, in two thirds of an inning of work.
GAME 2
Key Moments:
- During the first inning, leadoff hitter Bailey Henderson smacked her first home run of the season, but somehow it almost didn't count. The knock sailed deep down the third base line and made an audible plunk off the foul pole but as she came into third, the Raiders kept playing and tagged her before she reached the base. Much to everyone's surprise, the first umpire called her out before the other official overruled with a home run call.
- After the core of UP's lineup brought the team within 1 run in the bottom of the third, the backend of the order stepped up to tie the game at 4-4 in the fourth. The score came from Ashton Bell (JR/Castle Dale, Utah), who had walked to lead off and got into scoring position by stealing third. She was driven in by McKenzie Staats (FR/Great Falls, Mont.).
- The fifth, sixth, and seventh innings got progressively worse for the Lady Argos. While 7 of SOU's came in the seventh, it was in the sixth that the game was decided.
At the Plate:
- Henderson hit her first home run of the season. She now has a hit in every game this year and either an RBI or a run in all but one game.
- Southworth cooled off a bit, but still managed another hit and another RBI. Like Henderson, she has a hit in every game.
- Hanna Tarum (SO/Great Falls, Mont.) was the star of the game for the Lady Argos. She went 3-3 with 1 RBI.
In the Circle:
- Schweikert looked good until the fifth inning. She battled well and fared better against the same lineup than George, the team's ace did in the first game. That fell apart in the fifth and sixth inning and she ended up allowing 11 hits and 8 earned runs.
Other Notes:
- Tarum added to her strong Game 2 performance by being the team's best fielder in the game as well. She had 15 putouts, a career high, along with 1 assist with no errors. A number of those putouts where more than routine plays, with her multiple times digging bad throws out of the dirt to complete an out at first base.
Next up:
Another doubleheader against SOU for the Lady Argos will begin tomorrow on March 10 at 12/2pm.
