BOZEMAN, Mont. – It was a rough start for (22) University of Providence lacrosse in the 4th Annual Copper Cup, losing to (10) Montana State University 21-6. There were good things to take away from the game, with both goalkeeping and faceoffs showing a silver lining.
The game got out of hand in the first quarter, with the Bobcats taking a 5-0 lead through the first 15 minutes of play. UP didn't get its first goal until almost 20 minutes into the game, getting a goal from junior
Chase Clark. By the time he got the Argos on the board, the score sat at 7-1 MSU.
UP got 2 more goals before halftime and another 2 in the third quarter. In the end, all of the Argo goals were scored by either Clark or senior
Josh Smith. Each scored 3 goals and all of UP's goals were unassisted.
Turnovers cost the Argos dearly, as based on saves and faceoffs the team should have had the advantage in the possessions battle. Junior goalie
Jeremy Smith faced a lot of shots, and while his save percentage was below 50 percent, his 13 total saves were admirable considering offensive performance the Bobcats put on.
At the faceoff X, sophomore
Dante Duran and freshman
Wyatt Jones combined to win 17-31 of the game's faceoffs. Jones was particularly effective, going 10-17 with 5 groundballs.
Freshman attack
Turner Maza tied with Duran for the team lead in groundballs with 7.
UP's record goes to 1-4 (1-0) on the year and will face (12) University of Montana on Saturday, 24 at 3 p.m. The Argos have never beaten the Griz.
