UP Softball Split Against NU, Earning First Win of Conference Play

REDMOND, Wash. - The University of Providence earn their first win of conference play 6-2 in Game 1 against Northwest University. The Lady Argos stuck it out through rain, snow and shine to get in the first two games of the series against the Eagles.

Without allowing the weather to determine the outcome, UP took it into their own hands beating NU 6-2 in Game 1. Things took a turn in Game 2, with NU taking advantage of UP's 5 defensive errors for a final score of 6-3 Eagles.

GAME 1

Key Moments:
• Back-to-back doubles from Bailey Henderson (SR/Fernley, Nev.) and Gabrielle Canibeyaz (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) to leadoff the game gave UP an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st. That 1 run, scored by Henderson and driven in by Canibeyaz was the game's only run for the first 4 innings.
Shelby McMillen (FR/Park City, Mont.) started a rally in the 5th inning that changed the game for UP.  The run began for the Lady Argos after McMillen hit her first double of the season to get on base and was followed with a single from Henderson. With two runners in scoring position, Canibeyaz ripped one up the middle bringing in McMillen and Henderson, to give the Lady Argos a 3-0 lead. An RBI single from Hanna Tarum (SO/Great Falls, Mont.) brought Canibeyaz around and brought score to 4-0 UP.
• UP put the game out of reach with 2 more runs in the top of the sixth, led by a double from Kylie Gonzales (SR/Hubbard, Ore.).

At the Plate:?
• Canibeyaz lead UP's offense in the 6-2 victory over NU going 3-3 with 1 run and 4 RBIs. She now leads the team in RBIs (11).
• After being out in last week's doubleheader against EOU due to injury, Henderson came back just as effective as she was before. The senior went 3-4 scoring 3 runs for the Lady Argos.
• Making her fourth appearance of the season, McMillen made a statement at the plate, going 1-3 with a walk and scoring 2 runs.

In the Circle:
Kristina George (SR/Salt Lake City, Utah) brought her A game in Game 1 of the doubleheader against NU. She only allowed 3 hits, resulting in 2 runs for a complete game win. She struck out 7 batters and forced 9 fly outs and 5 groundouts.

GAME 2

Key Moments:
• Battling out a close three innings and out hitting NU 7-5, errors became a factor in 6-3 loss to NU.
• For the second straight game, the Lady Argo's hit 2 doubles in the top of the 1st inning. This time it was Gonzales and Williams, and this time the product was 1 run instead of 2. The runners to score were Canibeyaz and Gonzales.
• NU also started the game with a double, and used that to narrow the gap by 1 run.
• In the third inning is when NU's offensive started to take control of the game. UP gave up 2 runs in the inning, and 5 runs total in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th. A large part of the reason those runs scored, was 2 UP errors and 3 walks.

At the Plate:
• After going 1-4 in Game 1, Gonzales led the Lady Argo offense in Game 2. She went 2-4 with 2 hits, including the 1st inning double, and had her 6th RBI of the season.
Hanna Tarum continued to be consistent for the Lady Argos at the plate going 2-3.

In the Circle:
KJ Schweikert got her third start of the season. When Schweikert hit her spots with her pitches she was effective at forcing bad contact, getting 13 batters to groundout.

Up Next: UP will play Northwest in another doubleheader on Saturday, March 24 at 11 a.m. & 1 p.m. The first game will count towards conference play.
