RICHLAND, Wash. – University of Providence softball lost both games in a makeup doubleheader against Eastern Oregon. The combination of fielder errors and not enough hits led to a 5-1 conference loss in Game 1 and an 18-3 5-inning loss in a non-conference Game 2.
UP faced Eastern Oregon University in their first doubleheader back on March 17 in Missoula, Montana losing 10-1 and 4-2. UP is now 7-29 overall and 5-19 in conference.
Game 1
Key Moments:
- The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and brought in another run in the third for a 2-0 lead over the Lady Argos.
- In the bottom of the fourth, leadoff hitter Kylie Gonzales (SR/Hubbard/Ore.) ripped one out of left field for her fifth home run of the season.
- After two scoreless innings, UP's defense had 2 errors right off the bat to allow 2 runners on base. Next up to bat, Eastern Oregon's Rayne Spencer (JR/Pendleton, Ore.) capitalized with a home run to bring in three runs.
At the Plate:
- UP was outhit by EOU 6-4. The difference was 4 extra base runners for the Mountaineers because of 4 total UP errors.
- Three UP players were responsible for all four hits. Gonzales brought in the only run, hitting her fifth homerun of the season. She went 1-3 with 1 run and 1 RBI and is now tied with the most home runs on the team (5).
- Samantha Hernandez (SO/Los Angeles, Calif.) hit two of the UP's 4 hits. She went 2-3 while Karlie Southworth (SO/Lewiston, Mont.) went 1-2.
In the Circle:
- Kristina George (SR/Salt Lake City, Utah) pitched for a complete seven innings. George had 2 strike outs and forced 14 fly outs. She is now 7-13 record and still hold the lowest ERA on the pitching staff.
Game 2
Key Moments:
- The Lady Argos started off the first inning with 2 errors, allowing EOU to gain a 1-0 lead.
- In the third inning, the Mountaineers' widened the gap with 8 runs and another 5 in the fourth.
- UP's offense had a bright spot at the bottom of the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles from Gonzales and Hanna Tarum (SO/Great Falls, Mont.) combined with a walk from Gabrielle Canibeyaz (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) to load the bases. Kenzie Fast (FR/Tuolumne County, Calif.) hit a single up the middle to bring in Gonzales. Next up was Shelby McMillen (FR/Park City, Utah) entering the batting line up to pinch hit for Freeman. With two on base, McMillen ripped one up the center to bring in two more runs for the Lady Argos.
At the Plate:
- Gonzales continued her hot streak, leading the team offensively going 2-3 with 1 run.
- Going 1-2 and 1 RBI, Kenzie Gast (FR/Tuolumne County, Calif.) hit her second RBI of the season.
- McMillen went 2-2 and hit two of her total three RBIs of the season during the fourth inning.
- Hanna Tarum (SO/Great Falls, Mont.) and Canibeyaz both contributed with 1 run each.
In the Circle:
- UP's KJ Schweikert (FR/Columbia Falls, Mont.) started the non-conference game.
- After the Mountaineers earned a 9-0 lead over UP, Ashton Bell (JR/Castle Dale, Utah) came to relieve Schweikert. Bell finished the last two innings with 2 strikeouts and allowed 5 runs in 3 hits.
