CALDWELL, Idaho – The final doubleheader of the 2018 softball seasons brought University of Providence its eighth win of the season and saw senior
Kylie Gonzales (SR/Hubbard, Ore.) end her career with a bang. In the first game of the series against The College of Idaho, which counted as a conference game, the Lady Argos took down the Yotes 6-2, while UP lost Game 2, a non-conference contest, 8-5.
The Game 1 win ended a nine-game losing streak for the Lady Argos and the team finished the regular season with a record of 8-32 (6-21). That record won't be good enough to get UP into the Cascade Collegiate Conference Playoffs, so the team's 2018 season has reached its conclusion.
Game 1
Key Moments
- After losing both games of a doubleheader against CI a day earlier, including letting up 8 runs in the first inning of Game 2, the first game of the second doubleheader didn't start well. UP's starting pitcher Kristina George (SR/Salt Lake City, Utah) gave up a 2-run homer in the bottom of the first to put the Lady Argos in the hole 2-0.
- In the top of the next inning, George gave herself some help, coming in as a pinch runner and eventually scoring on a throwing error during an at-bat from Kenzie Gast (FR/Tuolumne County, Calif.).
- Scoring that run seemed to calm George down, only allowing 3 hits over the next 6 innings.
- Entering the fifth inning, UP still trailed the Yotes 2-1. Singles from Samantha Hernandez (FR/Los Angeles, Calif.) and Hanna Tarum (SO/Great Falls, Mont.), along with a walk loaded the bases for Gonzales. The senior proceeded to send the ball over the center field fence for a grand slam that gave UP a 5-2 lead.
- Gonzales wasn't done there. She added another run of insurance in the top of the seventh with another homer to center, this time a solo shot.
At the Plate
- Clearly Gonzales was the star of the game. She finished the game with a stat line of 2-4 with 2 runs, 5 RBI, and 2 HRs. She finishes the year as UP's home run leader with 7 total jacks. In large part because of those homers, she also leads the team with 22 RBI.
- Ashton Bell (JR/Castle Dale, Utah) was UP's next most effective batter, going 2-3 with 1 run.
- Mainly because she batted right after Gonzales in the order, Karlie Southworth (SO/Lewistown, Mont.) didn't manage to score or drive in any runs despite going 2-4.
In the Circle
- After giving up 2 hits, including the home run in the first inning, George ended up pitching quite well. She got her 18th complete game of the season. She picks up the win a 5 hit, 2 run performance despite having to overcome 2 errors from her defense.
Game 2
Key Moments
- UP was the first to get on the board in Game 2, and it started with a lead-off double from Bailey Henderson (SR/Fernley, Nev.). Three batters later, Henderson scored on a fielder's choice from Tarum that didn't result in an out due to a Yote fielding error.
- That lead was quickly erased with UP committing 4 errors in the bottom of the first, leading to 3 runs for CI.
- Despite scoring a run, the Lady Argos missed a big opportunity in the top of the second. UP had the bases loaded with no outs and Hannah Freeman (FR/Columbia Falls, Mont.) up to bat. Freeman brought Southworth home but also hit into a double play and a pop up on the team's next at-bat ended the inning.
- The Yotes scored 2 runs in both the bottom of the second and the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-2 lead.
- The Lady Argos wouldn't go away quietly. They once again loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning and this time took more advantage of the situation. A walk from Tarum brought 1 run in and then a single up the middle for Shelby McMillen (FR/Sandy, Utah) drove in another 2. That brought the score to 7-5, but the only run scored for the rest of the game was scored by the Yotes.
At the Plate
- In her usual leadoff spot, Henderson went 2-4 with 1 run. She also had UP's only extra-base hit of the game with her double in the first inning.
- Right after Henderson in the batter order was Gabrielle Canibeyaz (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) who also had a good day. She went 1-2 and scored 2 runs.
- The third major offensive force for UP in the game was McMillen who went 2-3 and accounted for 2 of the team's 4 RBI.
In the Circle
- Bell earned her fourth complete game of the season, going 6 innings while allowing 8 runs on 9 hits. Those stats likely would have looked better, however, if not for 4 UP fielding errors.
