GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The No. 20 Argos (14-7, 3-6) outscored the MSU-Northern Skylights (9-12, 1-8) 7-2 in overtime to capture a 63-58 victory on Thursday evening.
Parker Esary was an absolute threat in the post, earning her 11
th double-double on the season, grabbing a career-high 18 boards and netting 16 points in the win.
Emilee Maldonado also knocked down 16 points, in addition to four rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
Kerstyn Pimperton was a huge contributor on the defensive end with 10 boards, in addition to adding six points.
Peyton Kehr and Hailey Nicholson led the Skylights with 15 points apiece. Kehr narrowly missed a double-double as she tallied a team-high nine boards in the loss.
The Skylights went on a 6-2 run to open up the game with an early lead after two minutes of play. The Argos would tie things up at six and then again at seven and eight before breaking things open on 12-5 run to close out the first period with a seven-point advantage, 20-13.
The Argos continued to lay it on in the second quarter as they tallied an 8-4 run to extend their lead to double-digits, 28-17. However, the Skylights would rally to close the game on a 10-4 run of their own to bring the game back within five at the break, 32-27.
MSU-Northern came out of the locker room with four straight points to tie things up at 32. Both teams would trade field goals and free throws to a 37-37 stalemate after five minutes of play. The Skylights would take a 7-2 run to lead by five, but a three from
Kenedy Cartwright with three seconds to go brought the Argos back within two headed into the final 10 minutes, 44-42.
During the final period of regulation, the Skylights would net the first score, but four straight points form the Argos would tie things up at 46 all. MSU-Northern extended their lead back to four, 54-50, before a 4-0 Argo run would once again tie things up with a minute and a half remaining. Two Argo free throws put the Argos up by two, but a Skylight field goal would knot things up and send the game to overtime, 56-56.
A jumper from
Emilee Maldonado and an Esary free throw gave the Argos a 59-56 lead to open the period. The Skylights would net two to bring the game back within one, but a 4-0 Argo run closed things out to seal the 63-58 win.
