Box Score GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The No. 23 Argos (12-4, 3-2) dropped their second Frontier Conference game of the season on Tuesday night, falling 87-85 in an overtime heartbreaker to the MSU-Northern (10-7, 2-3). The Argos led by one with 18 seconds remaining, but Caulin Bakalarski netted the game-winning three to lift the Lights over the Argos.
Brandon Cotton and
Jalen Shepard both led all scorers as they tallied 28 points apiece. Shepard filled the box score, tallying three boards, three steals, three assists, and a block. Cotton also had a well-rounded performance with three rebounds, two steals, and two assists.
Mascio McCadney led the Lights with 23 points, while fellow Light Kavon Bey tallied 17 points. McCadney grabbed six boards, dished out five assists, swatted two balls, and collected two steals.
MSU-Northern opened the match on a 10-6 run to take the early lead. The Argos netted a three to cut the lead to one, but a 6-0 Lights run would extend the lead to seven, 16-9. MSU-Northern would eventually take a double-digit lead following a 9-4 run to hold a 12-point lead with less than nine minutes to play. The Argos would cut the deficit down to seven at the 2:51-minute mark, 36-29, but the Lights closed out the period on a 8-4 run to hold an 11-point lead at the break, 44-33.
The Lights maintained their double-digit lead until the 6:09-minute mark when a layup from Cotton brought the Argos within eight, 66-58. Providence slowly chiseled away at MSU-Northern's lead over the next three minutes and 20 seconds until the Argos tied things up at 68 following a 10-1 run. The Lights would take a three-point advantage after a 6-3 run, but an And-1 from Shepard tied things at 74 and send the game into overtime.
The Argos led for nearly the entire overtime, but the layup would give the Lights a one-point advantage with 25 seconds to go, 84-83. The Argos responded with a layup of their own to take the lead with 18 seconds on the clock, 85-84. However, MSU-Northern had one more trick up their sleeve as they knocked down a last second three to take the 87-85 win.
