La Grande, Oreg. - Ole Cloppenburg's goal in the 88th minute propelled the University of Providence men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Eastern Oregon.
The Argos (4-2, 6-2-1) got on the board first off the goal from Manuel Garcia in the 9th minute. The Mountaineers (2-3, 4-5-1) answered early in the second half with a goal from Javier Morgan. Cloppenburg then sealed the game with his 88th minute goal.
"It was a tough game," head coach
Matt Ball said. "Eastern Oregon is a good team and we had to battle to beat them. We ended up matching them tactically and it paid off."
The Argos attempted 11 shots compared to the Mountaineers 13.
Hernan Perez recorded seven saves.
"I'm proud of the compusure the team showed after conceding early in the second half," Ball said. "They regrouped and ended strongly."
They'll return to Argo Field on Friday, October 11 at 1 p.m. against the top seed of the Frontier Conference, Corban University (6-0, 8-0-1).
