GREAT FALLS, Mont. –
Zaccheus Darko-Kelly and
Brandon Cotton both scored over 30 points to carry the University of Providence men's basketball team over Northwest 112-104 in the final game of the
Bill Himmelberg Memorial Classic.
Darko-Kelly finished with 36 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks for the Argos while
Brandon Cotton added 32 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds.
Jaxen Hashley had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Hashley also continued his hot streak from beyond the arc, netting two three-pointers.
Rashee Stocks scored a career-high 15 points and also grabbed five rebounds and had three steals.
"I've been doing this a long time," head coach
Steve Keller said. "I don't think I've ever had a game where two players have had over 30. That's a heck of an effort. We just got a good mixture of guys."
After a back and forth first half which ended in a 52-52 game,
Rashee Stocks scored seven straight points to give the Argos a solid lead. Though the Eagles made it close, the Argos pulled through in the end to secure the victory.
"If you score 112 points you must be doing something right," Keller said. "Offensively we're great and we're hard to guard. We just have to do a better job defensively. We came off too many shooters. They penetrate and we help off and they kick to the shooters, and we're not supposed to help off. We have to get better than that."
Jase Paulsen led the Eagles with 20 points. Christian Hakilimali added 19 points and dropped eight dimes. Hussayn Ford had a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards.
After winning both games this weekend, the Argos move to 5-0 on the season.
"These were two good games for us," Keller said. "Both teams were good. These games made us better. It was a good tournament."
The Argos hit the road next week as they take on Salish Kootenai and Yellowstone Christian College in Havre on Friday and Saturday respectively. They'll return to Great Falls on Dec. 5 to open Frontier Conference play against Rocky Mountain College.
"I'm glad we got a chance to honor
Bill Himmelberg Sr. with some good basketball," Keller said. "I hope the fans enjoyed it. It sure was stressful as coaches but that usually makes for some good games for the fans."
