Argos Dominate Game Two to Split Friday's Doubleheader against Mountaineers

PASCO, Wash. – A comeback during game one would end in the Mountaineers' (8-27, 4-16 CCC) favor, 7-6, but the Argos (7-18, 7-13 CCC) closed Friday's doubleheader out with a dominant 5-1 game two to split Friday's games.

GAME ONE – University of Providence 6 – Eastern Oregon 7
How it Happened: The Argos got things going early as they got on the board in the opening frame. Following a lead-off bunt, Hannah VanDomelen would draw a walk, before Hannah Tarum would knock a one-out RBI-double to plate VanDomelen and put the Argos on top first, 1-0. The Mountaineers would tie things up in the bottom of the frame as they scored on an Argo error to knot the game at one, 1-1.

Eastern Oregon opened the second with a lead-off single, before a stolen base and a sacrifice fly would put the runner on third. An RBI-single would bring another home for the Mountaineers to give them a 2-1 lead after two.

The game remained tied through the third, but the Argos got things going again in the fourth. The Argos opened the inning up with a lead-off single from Taylor Mathews before a walk from Olivia Warren would put two aboard for the Argos. A sacrifice bunt put runners on third and second. After a pair of outs, Samantha Hernandez knocked a two-out RBI-single to retake the lead for the Argos, 3-2. Skyla Nuebauer followed with a two-out RBI-double to push the Argos lead to two, 4-2. VanDomelen would close things out with a two-out RBI-single to give the Argos a three-run advantage headed into the fifth, 5-2.

The Mountaineers got two back in the bottom of the fifth to bring the deficit back within one, 5-4.

Eastern Oregon found more success in the bottom of the sixth as a sacrifice fly and a pair of RBI-singles would plate three in the frame to give the Mountaineers a 7-5 lead.

Karlie Southworth opened the seventh inning with a lead-off solo home run, but it wasn't enough as the Mountaineers would retire the side to take the 7-6 victory.

At the Plate: Hernandez led the Argos on the day with two RBIs, going 1-for-3 and touching home once herself. VanDomelen was perfect at the plate, knocking 2-for-2 with an RBI and tallying her own run. Nuebauer, Tarum, and Southworth tallied the Argos other three runs in the contest.

In the Circle: Hannah VanDomelen (5-7) took the loss for the Argos, pitching five and two-thirds innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits, and putting out one batter in the contest.

GAME TWO – University of Providence 5 – Eastern Oregon 1
How it Happened: Much like the series opener the Argos didn't waste time putting scores on the board. Nuebauer started things off with a walk. Following a pair of outs, Tarum would get aboard with another walk. Southworth knocked a two-out RBI-double to put the Argos up 1-0. Mathews would reach on an error, which also sent Southworth home to give the Argos a two-lead advantage, 2-0.

The Argos kept the bats hot in the second inning as they plated another pair of runs. Following a lead-off out, Khalyn Hageness would knock a single, but a fielder's choice would put Hernandez aboard and tally the Argos second out. A double from Nuebauer would put two in scoring position before a two-out 2-RBI double from VanDomelen would give the Argos the four-point lead, 4-0. The Mountaineers would put one across in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit down to three, 4-1.

The game would remain at 4-1 through the following three innings, until the Argos would find success in the sixth. Following two outs to open the inning, the Argos would string together a walk, and a pair of singles to knock a two-out 2-RBI single from VanDomelen to put the Argos fifth run across, 5-1, and eventually seal the Argos victory.

At the Plate: VanDomelen was on fire in the second matchup as she would plate three runs on two hits with four at-bats. Southworth knocked the Argos other RBI in the contest, going 1-for-2. Nuebauer and Hageness had efficient at bats, with both going 2-for-3 in the game.

In the Circle: Brieanna Clifford (2-7) pitched a complete game for the Argos, only allowing a single run on four hits. She also tallied four strikeouts in the contest.
