ASHLAND, Ore. – The Argos closed out their series against the CCC-leading No. 4 Southern Oregon Raiders on Saturday with a pair of run-rule defeats, 13-0 and 14-1 at University Field.
GAME ONE – University of Providence 0 – Southern Oregon 13
How it Happened: The Southern Oregon Raiders captured a series sweep over the Argos as they took the third game with a 13-0 run-rule victory. After the Argos went down in order in the first, the Raiders produced an eight-run first of their own, tallying eight runs on six hits and one Argo error to take a decisive 8-0 lead.
McKenzie Staats would knock a one-out double at the top of the second, but a pair of strikeouts would close the inning as she would be left stranded. Southern Oregon would put two more across to extend their lead to double-digits heading into the third frame, 10-0. The Argos would make a pitching change in the third inning, with
KJ Schweikert putting the Raiders down in order during her first inning on the mound. However, Southern Oregon found more success in the fourth as they plated a trio of runners to push the lead to 13-0 heading into the fifth. The Argos'
Shelby McMillen connected on a two-out single to get aboard, but it just wasn't enough as the Argos would fall 13-0 in the contest.
At the Plate: Staats and McMillen tallied the Argos' pair of hits, going 1-for-2 apiece.
In the Circle: Khalyn Hageness (0-2) was the Argos pitcher of record, taking the loss in two innings pitched and allowing 10 runs on nine hits. Schweikert pitched in relief, playing the final two innings and allowing three runs on four hits, while also tallying the Argos sole strikeout of the contest.
GAME TWO – University of Providence 1 – Southern Oregon 14
How it Happened: The Argos fell in the series finale as the Southern Oregon Raiders powered their way to a 14-1 victory to close the weekend. The Raiders got things going again in the first inning, tallying a pair of runs to lead early, 2-0. The Raiders brought five more home in the second inning on five hits to push their lead to seven, 7-0. The Argos continued to struggle offensively as each batter in the Argos' lineup would be held hitless through the first three innings. The Raiders doubled their run total in the bottom of the third, putting seven across on six hits and leaving three on base to hold a 14-0 lead. The Argos finally found success in the fourth inning as
Hanna Tarum knocked a lead-off single to get aboard. Staats followed up with a single of her own to push Tarum into scoring position.
Karsten Williams came in clutch with an RBI-double to bring Tarum around and put the Argos first run on the board, 14-1.
Karlie Southworth got on base following a one-out fielder's choice, but the Argos three-hit inning was cut short as the Raiders would strand two on base to close the inning. Southern Oregon tallied one more hit in the bottom of the fourth, but a 1-2-3 fifth inning for the Argos would close out the 14-1 series finale.
At the Plate: Williams led the Argos at the plate as she went 1-for-2 with the Argos only RBI, while Tarum and Staats would earn the Argos two other hits in the contest.
In the Circle: Schweikert (0-6) took the loss for the Argos, pitching three innings and allowing 14 runs on 14 hits.
Jaden Williams pitched the final inning for the Argos and allowed one hit.
