GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Argo softball (8-29, 8-18) closed out their 2019 season on Saturday as they were topped twice by the Carroll Saints (19-22, 11-15) in a doubleheader at the Multi-Sports Complex.
GAME ONE – University of Providence 6 – Carroll College 9
How it Happened: The Carroll Saints earned the 3-1 Cascade Collegiate Conference victory as they defeated the Argos in a 9-6 contest in game three of the series. The Argos battled back and forth with the Saints through the first two innings as neither team would tally a hit after two. However, the Saints would break things open in the third. Carroll would tally a 2-RBI double, a sacrifice ground-out, and a 3-RBI home run to take a 6-0 lead after the third inning. The Argos responded in the fourth inning. A single from
Hannah VanDomelen would lead things off in the inning. Following a pop-out,
Hanna Tarum knocked a one-out single to push VanDomelen into scoring position. The Saints tallied another pop-out before senior
Karsten Williams came up clutch to smash a 3-RBI homer to cut the Argos deficit in half, 6-3. The Argos kept the momentum going in the fifth as
Taylor Mathews lead-off the inning with a solo bomb to bring the Argos within two, 6-4. The Saints would put three more across in the top of the seventh from a pair of RBI-singles and a run on a fielder's choice to give the Saints a five-run lead, 9-4. The Argos opened the seventh with a pair of singles to put VanDomelen back in scoring position to start a rally.
Hanna Tarum would reach on fielder's choice moving VanDomelen to third. Tarum would steal second to put two in scoring position before
McKenzie Staats knocked a 2-RBI double to push the sixth Argo run across, 9-6. The deficit just proved to be too much as a line-out and a strikeout would close out the contest and give the Saints the series win, 9-6.
At the Plate: Senior
Karsten Williams had a day as she went 2-for-4, knocking three home including herself with her huge home run in the contest. VanDomelen Mathews also had efficient at-bats, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and 2-for-3 and a run, respectively.
In the Circle: Brieanna Clifford (3-9) took the loss for the Argos, pitching six innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits, and putting away six batters in the contest.
KJ Schweikert closed out the final inning, tallying a strikeout.
GAME TWO – University of Providence 5 – Carroll College 6
How it Happened: Carroll rallied from a deficit to capture the series finale from the Argos. Following a pair of walks and a single, the Carroll Saints loaded the bases before a third walk in the opening inning would put the first run across for the Saints, 1-0. The lead was short-lived though as the Argos would take the lead after the first. Following a lead-off strikeout, the Argos would knock a single to get Nuebauer aboard. Nuebauer would steal second to get into scoring position. VanDomelen earned a walk, before a wild pitch would move the pair to second and third. The Saints tallied a second strikeout to try and close out the inning, but a Saints error and a late throw would allow Nuebauer and VanDomelen to score to put the Argos on top, 2-1. The Argos extended their lead in the third. A trio of singles would load the bases for the Argos with no outs. A one-out sacrifice fly would bring plate VanDomelen, before Southworth would steal home to give the Argos a three-run lead, 4-1. The Saints got one back in the top of the fourth to bring the game back to two, 4-2. The Argos pushed the lead back to three as a double from Nuebauer and a Saints error would plate the Argos fifth run of the game headed into the fifth, 5-2. Both teams were quiet in the fifth inning, but the Saints rallied in the top of the sixth. Carroll was able to bring four runners around on three hits in the sixth to take their first lead since the opening frame, 6-5. The Argos tried to get things going to tie things back up, but a pair of 1-2-3 innings would close out the Argos 2019 season, 6-5.
At the Plate: The Argos lone senior led the Argos in RBIs during the season finale, tallying a pair in the contest. Tarum and Nuebauer would both tally a pair of hits in the contest, going 2-for-2 and 2-for-4, respectively.
In the Circle: Jaden Williams (0-2) took the loss for the Argos, pitching one inning and allowing four runs on three hits.
Khalyn Hageness opened the game, pitching five innings for the Argos, allowing two runs on three hits and putting down a batter.
KJ Schweikert closed things out pitching the final inning and tallying a strikeout.
