Argos Split with Eagles During Friday's Doubleheader

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – University of Providence softball (5-16, 5-11 CCC) secured a 5-1 win in game one before falling by run-rule 13-3 during game two to split Friday's doubleheader against the Northwest University Eagles (9-21, 5-12 CCC).
 
GAME ONE – University of Providence 5 – Northwest University 1
How it Happened: The first inning went by scoreless, but the Argos would get things going in the second. Karlie Southworth led things off with a triple before an error would make Taylor Mathews safe and bring Southworth home to put the Argos on the board first, 1-0. A walk and a ground out would put runners at second and third, before a 2-RBI double from Ashley Wood would bring Mathews and McKenzie Staats home to make it 3-0 Providence after two. The Argos kept things going in the third as a walk and a ground-out would put Hanna Tarum in scoring position. A RBI-single from Mathews would tack one more on the board to make it 4-0 Argos headed into the fourth inning. A single and an RBI-double would tally the first run for the Eagles, 4-1, in the top of the fourth inning. However, a single and an RBI-double from Mathews in the fifth would put across Tarum once more for the Argos to send the game to its final 5-1.
 
At the Plate: Mathews had a game as she went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Wood knocked in the Argos two other runs, batting 1-for-3 in the contest. Samantha Hernandez tallied a pair of hits for the Argos, while Tarum, Staats, and Southworth notched a hit each in the contest.
 
In the Circle: Hannah VanDomelen (4-6) earned the win for the Argos, pitching a complete game and allowed only one run on four hits and put out two batters.
 
GAME TWO – University of Providence 3 – Northwest University 13
How it Happened: The game remained scoreless through the first inning, but a pair of singles, an error, and a sacrifice fly would put the Eagles on the board first, 1-0. Northwest would tack on another in the third as the lead-off batter reached on an error before an RBI and a slow throw would bring her home, 2-0. The Eagles would get one more across on an RBI-single before closing out the inning with a three-run advantage. Northwest extended their lead a little more in the fifth a lead-off single, an error, and a RBI-single would give the Eagles a 4-0 lead. Northwest would get two more batters in scoring position before a 2-RBI single would plate two more to make it a six-run game. An RBI-single closed out the fifth for the Eagles, 7-0. The Argos rallied to cut the deficit in the bottom of the fifth. After loading the bases, Skyla Neubauer knocked a 2-RBI double to plate Karsten Williams and KJ Schweikert, 7-2. The Argos tallied an RBI-single to bring Nuebauer home and cut the deficit back down to four, 7-3. However, the Eagles broke things open in the sixth inning. Following a lead-off walk, the Eagles earned an RBI-double to make things 8-0. Two more runners would get into scoring position before a 2-RBI single would push the Eagles lead back to seven, 10-3. With runners on first and second, an RBI-single would plate the Eagles 11th run of the inning, 11-3, but a wild pitch and a single followed by a slow throw would plate two more to bring the Eagles lead to double-digits, 13-3. The Argos were not able to get anything going in the bottom of the frame as the Eagles would claim the 13-3 victory.
 
At the Plate: Nuebauer led the Argos at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run of her own. VanDomelen tallied the Argos other RBI, going 1-for-3. Staats, Schweikert, and Hernandez notched the Argos three other hits in the contest.
 
In the Circle: Brieanna Clifford (1-6) took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits over four innings. Schweikert pitched 1.1 innings, relinquishing seven runs on five hits. Both pitchers would tally a strikeout in the contest.
 
Up Next
The Argos will close out their series with the Northwest University Eagles on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
