Billings, Mont. – The University of Providence soccer teams split their two games against Montana State – Billings on Saturday in both team's season openers. The men's team won in overtime 1-0, while the women's team fell 1-2.
In the first game of the day, the women's team got off to a slow start, allowing a goal from Sahara Iverson in the 39
th minute. The Yellowjackets took a 2-0 lead from a goal by Haley German in the 54
th minute. Moments later, the Argos Eme McLaughlin responded with a penalty kick to cut the lead to one. However, the Argos couldn't recover, falling 2-1.
In the second game, the men's team fought a highly-contested match. The game started off chippy, resulting in a yellow card being called against the Yellowjackets Bryan Maxwell just six minutes into the game. The teams couldn't find an edge against the other until overtime, when George Holloway found the back of the net in the 96
th minute, clinching the game for the Argos.
The Argos will travel to Arizona for the next game facing Embry-Riddle at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 6. The women will also take the road, facing Arizona Christian at 11 a.m. on Sept. 7.
