GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence women's soccer team got on the board first but couldn't hang as the team ultimately fell to #24 Oregon Tech Friday afternoon 3-1.
After a scoreless first half, the Argos (1-6, 1-3) got on the board early in the second period when
Dani Chang sent a beautiful through ball to
Brittany Burman for the goal. Amanda Seward evened the score for the Owls (6-2, 3-1) in the 55
th minute off an assist from Nyah Kendall.
The Owls took the lead two minutes later when Mehana Ortiz found the back of the net off the assist from Seward. The Argos didn't back down, creating multiple opportunities down the stretch of the game. However the Owls responded to a last-ditch Argo effort with a counter attack to score their third and final goal in the 89
th minute to solidify the 3-1 win.
"We didn't get the result we wanted, but every time our team steps out on the field they continue to impress me," head coach
Heather Blandford said. "We're applying the things that we're working on in training. It's a lot of fun to see that. I'm extremely proud of our group. I thought as a collective unit we were playing extremely well."
The Owls outshot the Argos 30-2 on the day. Chang and Burman attempted the two shots for the Argos, with both of them landing on target.
Justine Humphry played the entire 90 minutes for the squad, recording 13 saves on the day.
Things won't get any easier for the team tomorrow when Argos take on Southern Oregon, who defeated the Owls last weekend.
"We knew both games were going to be a big challenge for us," Blandford said. "Our biggest thing is can we rise to the occasion? Can we meet their intensity? Can we come in and play our style and stay true to who we are as a team? In this conference, we get high-level competition every game. This is just another opportunity for us to grow as a team."
Tomorrow's game against the Raiders (5-3-1, 3-1) will kick off at 3:30 p.m. at Argo Field.
