GREAT FALLS, Mont. – In the first game of the season Friday night, the University of Providence men's basketball team took down Yellowstone Christian 98-71 in the McLaughlin Center.
Five players scored in double-figures for the Argos (1-0), led by 15 from returning
Honorable Mention All-American Marcus Stephens.
Jake Olsen and
Elijah Oliver each scored 14 points, while
Rashee Stocks and
Dawson Fowler added 11 and 10, respectively. Oliver and Fowler both recorded nine rebounds on the night; both needed just one more rebound to secure a double-double.
"We hope to always have five guys in double-figures, and hopefully we'll get a couple more in there as the season goes on," head coach
Steve Keller said. "I thought we shared the ball pretty well and I thought our new guys did a good job. We were a little sloppy but the guys played hard. It was a good first game."
21 of the team's 33 made field goals were assisted, with Fowler and
JF Daho leading the way with four a piece. As a team, the Argos shot 39.3% from the field (33/84) and 22.9% from beyond the arc (8/35). They shot 71% from the line, making 24 of their 34 attempts over the course of the evening. The squad also outrebounded the Centurions (0-7) 54-44.
"Rebounding is going to be one of our weaknesses so it was good to see guys like Elijah and Dawson hit the boards hard," Keller said. "We didn't shoot it very well from three but we got to the line a lot."
Devin Session led Yellowstone Christian with 17 points and six boards, while Doug Merida added 12 points.
The Argos will conclude their weekend doubleheader with another game against the Centurions tomorrow. The game will tip off at 5:00 p.m. in the McLaughlin Center.
