Argos Fall to Saints in Final Game of the Year

HELENA, Mont. – The University of Providence women's soccer team lost their final game of the season Friday, falling to Carroll College 3-0.

Melissa Dugger got on the board first for the Fighting Saints (5-7-1, 5-5-1), scoring a goal in the 19th minute. The Argos (2-13, 2-10) remained down a goal at half and fought valiantly early on in the second. The Saints kept coming, scoring two goals in the 79th minute to come away with a 3-0 victory.

"Carroll came out attacking," head coach Heather Blandford said. "They came flying at us and really put us on our heels early. We started to find our rhythm a bit more in the second half and were able to possess and create chances for ourselves. Towards the end of the game we honestly started to get tired. We didn't have enough numbers to run through that."

The Saints outshot the Argos 25 to three. Dani Chang attempted two of those shots, with both landing on target, while Brittany Burman attempted the other shot. Justine Humphry started in the net for the Argos, recording 10 saves on the day.

The game marks the end of the season for the Argos, who are in their first season for Blandford. The team fought valiantly all season, losing three games by a sole goal. The team also had its momentum disrupted midway through the season when the team forfeited four games due to Cascade Collegiate Conference COVID-19 policies.

"It's a season of change and a season of new beginnings," Blandford said. "We've been through a lot as a group this year. We've approached every game and every opportunity with everything we've got. I could not be more proud of this group for doing that. I see an extremely bright future. This year was the foundation for what we're going to build. We learned and grew and made new standards and new expectations. This is the first stepping stone for that. Hopefully we made our seniors proud tonight because we are sure proud they were be apart of our program. It's part of this rebuilding phase and we'll be forever grateful for that."
