HELENA, Mont. – The #5 University of Providence volleyball team won the Frontier Conference Tournament Championship Saturday night, cruising past Carroll College in a three-set sweep. The Argos (25-2, 10-0) defeated the Fighting Saints (14-15, 5-5) 25-20, 25-14, 25-14.
"I'm just so thrilled," head coach
Arunas Duda said. "What a great weekend for our girls. They were so poised throughout the entire thing. They came in and just took care of business. What a great feeling when your team does what you trained them to do. I'm so proud of these girls. What a great group. It's well-deserved."
The win marks the fourth straight season that the program has won the Frontier Conference Tournament Championship. It also caps off an undefeated season against conference opponents; the team went 16-0 against them this season. The win also marks 18 straight wins so far on the season, with their last loss of the season coming over two months ago on Sept. 10.
"All the credit goes to our girls," Duda said. "We've had such great kids come from our program that have put in a lot of work to set us up for this. The girls here took advantage of it again this year. To go undefeated in conference and through the tournament, what an accomplishment. It's such a great, gritty group. To hold that and sustain that all the way through is amazing."
Cydney Finberg-Roberts stood out during the match, recording an astounding 40 assists during the win.
Sadie Lott led the attack with 11 kills, while
Jenna Thorne notched eight.
Sacha Legros led the team with 18 digs, while
Taylor Christensen finished with 17. The team also dominated at the net, recording 12 blocks on the match;
Mariah Jardine finished with five and
Zoe Naugle had four.
As a team, the Argos outhit the Saints .256 to .055 and recorded 44 kills compared to the Fighting Saints 25.
"We have some good veterans on the team that really led us," Duda said. "We also had some other people step up. When those people lead you and show you the right way, it enables everyone else to do their role and it takes the pressure off. Just a great overall team performance from our girls."
With the win, the team has clinched an automatic qualifier into the NAIA National Tournament, which will begin next Saturday. The team will watch the NAIA Selection Show, which will start at 9:00 a.m. on Nov. 15, to see who their opponent will be. The squad will host an opening round game Saturday afternoon in Great Falls - if they win they'll advance to the 24 team tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.
"This weekend will give our girls a ton of confidence," Duda said. "We're playing really well. This is probably the best we've played. We still have a couple things that we can go back at practice and improve on. It gave our girls a lot of confidence to be able to do that the last two weeks. We fixed a lot. If we can continue to do that in practice and continue to get better before the tournament I'll continue to be excited to see what we can do."
