GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The #8 University of Providence volleyball team survived a thrilling five-set match Thursday evening, defeating Carroll College 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-10. The win marks the 15th straight game the team has won this season.
The Argos (22-2, 9-0) started out slow, but managed to recover enough to take the first set. The teams split the next two sets, but Carroll responded, taking the fourth set in dominant fashion and seemingly gaining momentum heading into the fifth. The Argos didn't back down however, racing out to a 6-1 start in the fifth set, led by two service aces from
Adysen Burns and three straight kills from
Jenna Thorne. The Saints couldn't overcome the quick start, eventually falling 15-10.
"It seems like every time we play Carroll here at home it goes the distance," head coach
Arunas Duda said. "We had a hard time finding our rhythm. Credit to Carroll they did some nice things to slow us down. There were a couple of things that we had a hard time adjusting too. It wasn't the normal level of play that I've seen our girls perform at."
"The girls did a good job of keeping their composure in that fifth set and having that confidence that even though we hadn't performed our best, we can still pull it out," Duda continued. "Whether you're hitting a ball, whether you're setting a ball, they had confidence in what they were doing. The ball seemed to bounce our way a little bit more favorably in that fifth set."
The win capped off an emotional night, as the team honored the team's two seniors,
Cydney Finberg-Roberts and
Sacha Legros, before the game. The two were dominant on the floor, with Finberg-Roberts recording a total of 53 assists and 13 digs while Legros recorded a team-high 29 digs.
"It's very typical of their careers," head coach
Arunas Duda said. "They always find a way to grind it out and come up with a win. That's what they do. Those kids are winners and they just find a way to show some grit and grind it out and come out with a win. What a great example of who they are on Senior Night."
Thorne led the attack with 17 total kills while
Sadie Lott added 13.
Zoe Naugle led the team with five blocks, while Lott added three.
Taylor Christensen added 21 digs for the team.
As a team, the Fighting Saints (12-13, 5-4) outhit the Argos .194 to .159. Taelyr Krantz led the way with 18 kills, while Katherine McEuen and Lexi Mikkelsen added 11 and 10, respectively. Hannah Schweikert notched 31 assists and Kyle Kackman added 27. Julia Carr recorded 27 digs for the squad.
The Argos will have just one day off before they conclude the regular season on Saturday, with a road matchup against Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont. The game will start at 6:00 p.m.
"I really do think we travel well," Duda said. "We've played a lot of matches on the road by design. We're going to have to show up and play our best. We can't get away with another subpar performance. We just had a hard time adjusting. If Rocky throws some different things at us and we can't adjust quickly enough, that's how we got a in the hole tonight. Hopefully we'll pull that out and adjust a little faster on the fly."
